why not 4 wheel disc brakes?

Does anyone have an idea or threory as to why they didn't put 4 wheel disc brakes on the Canyon's and Colorado's? I miss having four wheel disc's, and I really don't like the stopping power the rear drums provide. Thx

Truthfully, Drums provide similar stopping power as a same sized disk, at least until you get into high performance materials.

I do agree that I'd rather have disks from the aesthetics and ease of maintenance standpoint, however, for budget reasons we get drums. No two ways around it. The more inexpensive the car, the more likely it is to have rear drums.

Re: why not 4 wheel disc brakes?

IMO, all brake systems are set-up to provide 60% to the front and 40% to the rear. I think the SUV's get them in the rear due to front/rear weight ratio. Now, in my 15 years in the sales buizz, all truck sales traing has told us that the rear brakes on "trucks" are drum set-up to keep them for the most part dirt, rock and mud free for safety.

Re: why not 4 wheel disc brakes?

yea chevy tried rear rotors on silverados for like one or two model years. the rotors rusted like hell up here in the north in a year or less. they even had a recall to add a kind of mudflap to keep the crap out of the rotors. after that they decided to go back to drum. the new ones may have them since they re-designed the whole body, but i dont remember

Back a few years when GM was offering disc brakes on the rear of the Silvy, they did a lot of testing. Their engineers took two identical Silvys except one had rear drums and the other had discs. The disc equipped Silvy stopped on average only 72 feet shorter than the drum Silvy. For the cost factor, Gm gave us drums. I wouldn't be surprised if the front rear bias on our trucks was more like 75/25.

I agree! Seems more like 75/25. I drove a Highlander for 6yrs prior to the purchase of my Canyon. Dont get wrong I love my Can, but the Highlander had 4 wheel discs and stopped on a dime. I miss that braking confidence that I don't seem to get with my Canyon. Doesn't the Nissan Frontiers have all wheel discs?

I believe the Frontier has 4 wheel disc but depending on the front to rear proportioning, may not stop any better than the 355s. My wife's Impala has 4 wheel discs and stops better than my truck, but also weighs almost a thousand pounds less. I suspect the brake proportion on her car is more like 60/40 since rear passenger weight is very close to the rear axle.

IDK if they still use it, but GM and Toyota both tried dynamic rear proportioning where the amount of rear braking depended on the weight over the rear axle. Increase the weight and the rear brakes did more of the work.
