Power Tonneau Lift Kit

I've been looking for something like a keyless entry for my tonneau cover. I came across a kit from autoloc. and was wondering if anyone knows if when you put the cover down will it sort of lock it in place? So you have to open it by remote and are unable to open it by hand.

I would want to hook this up to my security system.

Re: Power Tonneau Lift Kit

You will have to open and close it with the actuator once it is installed. And, when it is in the down position it holds it in position, not like a shock

I also found this kit on sale. not sure if I could use it on my tonneau cover or not tho but maybe on my tailgate?

get with DB I think he has his on an accuator.

Very cool idea. wonder how fast it opens? would kinda be a pain if it was real slow.

Not sure if this has a switch or something, but if anything goes wrong electronically, can you get the tonneau open?

That was something that was brought up to me when I was talking with a tonneau dealer here in town...

Re: Power Tonneau Lift Kit

Just make sure that when you install it when it is in its down position that it has slight pressure on the tonneau cover. If it is left just resting on the bed the tonneau bouncing slightly will strip the worm gear in the actuator, plus the rattle will annoy the shit out of you

yeah that would be something I would have to keep in mind. I'm sure I could run an emergency cable that the shaved people use so I could open it if something fails. dont they use actuators in there setups?

The emergency cable for shaved doors usually just unlatches the door and then it pop opens. The actuator in a shaved door just opens the door latch momentarily.

This would not be the same case as a tonneau cover which would use the actuator to lower and raise the tonneau. I have thought about running an actuator on my tonneau but the power failure is what has stopped me.

The only way I could see it working with an emergency cable is if you set it up like a door and ran a latch that the tonneau locked into. Then you could run a cable to that latch in case something happened.

Damn Shane is there anything you can't or won't be able to do with the touch of a button?

Re: Power Tonneau Lift Kit

Yeah I'll try to do a how-to. hopefully Dropemlow still works at stylin and could help me get this kit for a better price. I've been wanting to do this for awhile now so hopefully I will not have to much trouble with it. I have to think of something I could do in the event something goes wrong with the kit before I place an order tho. maybe instead of screws I could use a pin to hold the bottom of the actuator so if anything happens I just pull a cable to the pin which would disconnect the bottom part that would allow me to lift the tonneau cover up.

Re: Power Tonneau Lift Kit

Getting into the bed in the even of a power or actuator failure will be nearly impossible.

I used to have high-torque actuators in place of the 2 shocks to lift/close mine. It was great when it worked. We had a heat spell here where the high temp was 124°F. The side of the truck that was being hit by the sun got really hot. Well, the actuator on that side was able to go down but at a slower rate than normal. When I arrived at my next client, that side would not raise. The actuator failed. Luckily for me, the other actuator still worked. I lifted the tonneau cover as high as it would go without causing stress cracks on the fiberglass, then crawled under it to unbolt the failed actuator.

Here's some footage from when it worked

Re: Power Tonneau Lift Kit

You can get faster actuators.

I chose the high-torque actuators for their strength, not speed.

Here's why I needed the strength

Re: Power Tonneau Lift Kit

Would the actuators wok on a tonneau cover with a handle on it? (the handle lifts up to open) or would it just be better getting a new tonneau cover?

It would work, you just won't be using it anymore. You just have to remove the latch bars on the sides where the tonneau hooks onto. The actuators will keep the tonneau down for you.

Re: Power Tonneau Lift Kit

To hard-wire it you will need the following items that can be bought at OSH:

- 1 On-Off-On DPDT switch with 6 prongs.
- Red, black, green and blue 16ga wires
- Wire connectors, heat shrink tubing, grommets, electrical tape and wire looming

This is how it's wired
