Air/fuel gauge

Hey I just picked up a used but still in perfect shape autometer air fuel mix gauge. Has anyone installed one of these in there truck? It has three wires coming off the back. Purple, red, and black.

Re: Air/fuel gauge

Black - ground
Red - power, I ran mine off from the wiper fuse
Purple - I tapped the Green wire going to the O2 sensor

With the wire colors you mentioned you have a narrow band A/F gauge

Re: Air/fuel gauge

Rick, with all due respect, don't waste your time that narrow band gauge install. Avoid breaking into the wiring to your OEM O2's. Sell that puppy to someone looking for a "light show".

My recommendation is to purchase a wideband O2 controller and gauge for accurate/usable information. A worthy investment.

Re: Air/fuel gauge

I have a narrowband, it can be annoying as it just bounces up and down as it receives the ever changing voltages from the o2 sensor. As Canyon08Z71 mentioned, a wideband is much better and I will be upgrading to one of those soon enough

Re: Air/fuel gauge

What's the reason for these gauges? Do they help or is it just for monitoring?

Both are for Monitoring (primarily). The WB O2 can also be used for feedback to a tuning device... Neither are bolt on modifications that makes HP by installing (if that might be the question).

Narrowband (OEM) O2 sensors switch rapidly in closed loop (open loop it will be maxd out), providing little usuable information in this form.

Wideband O2+gauge will provide actual air fuel ratio in closed loop or open loop. Usuable information for the owner to monitor their vehicles performance in either mode. Also, your tuning can interface to the wideband, allowing the tuner to dial in your vehicle accurately..

So basically what your saying is that I really don't need one of these because I have no idea what you talking about.

Thanks for clearing it up Gerry.

So if I don't install the air/fuel guage I have now what you guys recommend for another gauge to help? I bought a three gauge pod and I got a volt meter, oil pressure, and I was going to install the air/fuel but I will take Gerry's advice and pass on that one I got.
