Help! Interior lights (dome, footwell) won't turn off!

So this morning I go out to start my truck. The dome light and footwell lights came on when I opened the door and after I started the truck they didn't go off like they usually do. I tried opening and shutting all of the doors again to make sure they were all shut, and I even tried to turn them off manually on the dash but they would not go out! Furthermore, if one of the door switches was bad, I would have a "doors" message on the DIC, right? They couldn't have been on all weekend because the battery would have been dead this morning. I haven't driven my truck since last Friday evening.

They stayed on for my whole drive to work. I tried fiddling withvthe dash switch while I was driving and it had no effect on either dome or footwell lights.I figured I could atleast get them to maybe flicker or something if the switch was bad?

I disconnected the battery when I got to work to shut them off so my battery wouldn't run down today.

Anyone ever have anything similar happen? What could it be? Bad dash switch? Bad door switch? BCM brain fart?

Re: Help! Interior lights (dome, footwell) won't turn off!

Just an update, went outside and hooked the battery back up and they all came on again and wouldn't go out. I even tried locking the doors with the keyfob and they wouldn't go out when locked.

Unhooked the battery again so it wouldn't run down.

Do you have LED dome or normal bulbs?

Re: Help! Interior lights (dome, footwell) won't turn off!

Sounds like one of the door switches is shorted to ground. Try taking the drivers door switch out (just one torx screw) and pulling the connector off. If that don't work, try the other side.

Edit: Just reread your OP. I too, would think that if the switch was bad you would get the "Door" light. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try the switch.

Nope, and nope. I've hit the button 4 or 5 times and it has no effect. The dimmer wheel dosen't have any effect either.

Is there anyway I can test this switch before I dump $50 (or more) on a new one?

From what I've been reading, if the BCM was fried, it would affect a whole lot more than just the courtesy lights. The DRL's, wipers, etc would all be going bonko and that isn't the case. Everything works perfect with the exception of the courtesy lights.

The dome light white wire is negative switched. Remove the dome and do continuity from the white wire to ground, disconnect the driver side door switch and see if that opens the circuit. If not continue on with the footwells then to the headlight switch till you get an open circuit.

Just the man I was hoping would chime in..

Your thoughts on the BCM? Wiring/troubleshooting I can stomach. I'm not thrilled about replacing the BCM though.

The BCM interior circuit is "SINKED" switched. If the BCM is at fault it's more likely a transistor failure. Do the troubleshooting as stated first with the battery disconnected.

I'll continuity check everything this evening after work and post the results here.

Just for fun, I have both battery terminals disconnected now with the key in the ignition and turned to "on". I had read several places this will help to drain off capacitors. I've also read to touch the terminals together for a couple seconds but I didn't. I'll do it before I leave work this evening and see what happens.

Re: Help! Interior lights (dome, footwell) won't turn off!

Ok, an update. Made it home from work and broke out my meter and test light.

The battery has been unhooked most of the day today and I briefly touched terminals before I hooked it back up when I left work. When I hooked the battery up, the lights immediately came on even though all the doors were shut and the light button/dimmer wheel on the headlight switch was set to "off".

Started the truck and drove it home and worked the wipers, turn signals, cruise control, headlights, all 4 power windows, locks, hi/low beams and everything worked perfect. This leads me to believe the BCM hasn't shit on me yet. If the BCM was toast, it would be affecting lots more than just my interior lights, right? From what I've read when the BCM dumps the power windows start acting funny along with turn signals and headlights/tail lights, right?

Anyway, got home and unhooked the battery. I removed all of the bulbs from the sockets under the dash and dome light and the WHITE wire on each bulb socket connects with ground, no matter what I do on the headlight switch. Button, dimmer wheel, whatever, each white wire is "ground" according to my test meter.

The red/orange wire is +14v hot. Whether the truck is running or not. When the truck was shut off I was measuring about 14.1 and with it running I was measuring about 14.9 which was from the alternator I'm positive. So, no matter how I manipulated the headlight switch controls, these two wires always stayed the same. White = ground, Red/orange = hot.

I also took the liberty to go around and remove all of the door switches and test them. They all checked good. When the door is open, the switch is closed and will allow current to pass. When the door is shut it presses the switch in and opens the circuit, which makes sense as to kill voltage to the interior lights.

The headlight switch works fine. It controls the headlights normally (Auto/parking/on) witht he exception of the dimmer wheel and interior light defeat button. I swapped my third brakelight for an all LED one so the cargo light button dosen't have anything to control or I would have tested it too. I will mention the dimmer wheel dosen't "dim" the dash lights and radio lights correctly. It never has. It seems real "spotty" meaning you can move it just a little bit and it will almost shut them all off or you can turn it all the way down to dim the lights a lot and it won't hardly dim them at all. Maybe something in that part is burnt out? It's been like that for three years though, ever since I've had the truck. I've just never fooled with it much. I would like to think the headlight switch is causing my problem, I'm really hoping it is causing my problem vs. the BCM. It's odd too, because everything was A1 perfect until this morning. My truck has sat all weekend without being touched. If the lights would have been on, the battery would have been dead this morning, but it wasn't.

Where do I need to go from here?

Damn, looks like you did a lot of testing, Im in to see what is the cause. I personally think it will be the dimmer wheel switch the cause.

Lets see what the electrical gurus says about it.

Oh snap. I may just take you up on that offer man!

I'd like to somehow test my headlight switch, but I have no clue where I would even probe it.

Supermod? This thread has your name all over it man, I need your help!

Anyone been doing some interior led mods recently?
Battery disconnected. Disconnect the headlight switch and reconnect the battery with out the HL switch. What happens?

Nope. No LED playing inside. I have a LED third brake light but I've had it for about a year and a half now and it hasn't bothered anything yet.

I'll do the headlight switch thing this evening and report back.

Re: Help! Interior lights (dome, footwell) won't turn off!

Unhooked battery, removed HL switch. Reconnected battery.

+12V on red/orange on each lamp socket, white grounds.

I'm guessing this wasn't supposed to happen? No matter what I do (short of unhooking the battery) I can't get +12v off of that red/orange wire and the white wire is always grounded. Which would make sense why the lights are on all the time.
