just because its interference doesnt mean its bent a valve. might have gotten lucky. ive done timing belts on interference engines that ran afterwards.

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

I got a bit done tonight. Pulled the oil pan and timing cover. Got the timing chain set and the remain sty nice and tight. Still a little confused about the rotating the exhaust actuator before tightening. It only moved all of a degree or so. But it's in there all put back together. I'm going to install the manifold and intake tomorrow to see how i did. I took a video of the timing chain and what not for you guys. Hope it helps explain more/show more how it motors work. If it's not uploaded by the time i pad out tonight anyone of you guys can get it off my photobucket in the morning and pussy it here. Should be almost done tho.

I have a bad feeling is not the tensioner. I'm hooking up the Trans cooler in a few.

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

if you just replaced the tensioner and not the chain it probably will sound the same because I'm sure that timing chain got stretched.

How did the teeth on the sprockets look?

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

Sprockets are perfect. There's no way that chain got stretched.

Ineed to get more info on the install of the exhaust sprocket. There's a mention of rotating it before filly tightening it down.

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

Install the intake camshaft sprocket into the timing chain. Aligning the marked link (1) on the timing chain with the timing mark on the intake camshaft sprocket. Important:

To aid in aligning the sprocket to the camshaft, use a 25 mm (1 in) wrench on the hex of the camshaft to rotate.
Ensure the alignment pin is properly engaged with the camshaft.

Install the intake camshaft sprocket onto the intake camshaft. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice (See: Service Precautions\Vehicle Damage Warnings\Fastener Notice).
Install the new intake camshaft sprocket bolt. Tighten the bolt to 20 N.m (15 lb ft) plus an additional 100 degrees using the J 45059 .

Remove the J 44217 (1) and J-44217-45 (1).

Remove the J 44221 from the camshafts.
Install the intake CMP sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Intake (See: Powertrain Management\Computers and Control Systems\Camshaft Position Sensor\Service and Repair).
Install the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement (See: Valve Cover\Service and Repair).

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

this appears more in depth

Important: Ensure the #1 piston is at TDC. The pin on the crankshaft for the timing chain sprocket should be straight up.

Install the crankshaft sprocket to the crankshaft snout. Important: Every 7th link of the timing chain is darkened to aid in aligning the timing marks.
Install the intake camshaft sprocket into the timing chain. Aligning the dark link (1) of the timing chain with the timing mark on the intake camshaft sprocket.
Feed the timing chain down through the opening in the cylinder head.
Install the timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket. Align the dark link (2) of the timing chain with the timing mark on to the crankshaft sprocket. Important: Ensure the alignment pin is properly engaged with the camshaft

Ensure the camshaft actuator is fully advanced prior to installation. Refer to Camshaft Position Actuator Diagnosis (See: Testing and Inspection\Component Tests and General Diagnostics).

Install the exhaust camshaft actuator into the timing chain. Aligning the dark link (1) of the timing chain with the timing mark (1) on the exhaust camshaft position actuator sprocket. Important:

To aid in aligning the actuator to the camshaft, use a 25 mm (1 in) wrench on the hex of the camshaft to rotate
Ensure the alignment pin is properly engaged with the camshaft

Install the exhaust camshaft actuator onto the exhaust camshaft.

Install the new exhaust camshaft actuator bolt. Tighten the bolt to 25 N.m (18 lb ft) plus an additional 135 degrees using the J 45059 .

Remove the tee in the timing chain tensioner to regain tension on the timing chain.

Remove the J 44221 from the camshafts.

The dark links (1) on the timing chain should be aligned with the marks on the sprockets as shown.
Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement (See: Timing Cover\Service and Repair).
Install the intake CMP sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Intake (See: Powertrain Management\Computers and Control Systems\Camshaft Position Sensor\Service and Repair).
Install the exhaust CMP sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Exhaust (See: Powertrain Management\Computers and Control Systems\Camshaft Position Sensor\Service and Repair).
Install the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement (See: Valve Cover\Service and Repair).
Install #1 cylinder spark plug. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement (See: Spark Plug\Service and Repair).

^^^^^^^^quitter

Jd thx. I just got the file from all data too. It looks like the actuator/reluctor is rotated clockwise by a 1/4 in. That's the only thing i haven't done.

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

The reluctor moves all of 2-3 degrees. The reluctor itself is attached to the cam and the sprocket is technically separate.

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

OMFG i just sat here and finally read all this BS and im about ready to start an 07 Longblock Swap fund for you Kevin lol, cuz i woulda gave up on this shit weeks ago!

I talked to my buddy who's done a bunch of I5 heads and he told me there wasn't anything special about torquing down the cam sprockets or their rotation prior to installation. Just to make sure the exhaust cam sprocket/actuator is locked? Cuz i guess the oil pressure unlocks it and actuates is and the spring pulls it back to locked but yeah anyway this sucks.

Seems like your getting closer though. I still have my doubts about this engine and it's past history....

One of my neighbors made a comment about fuel pressure. I'll check that tomorrow. I think I'll be buying a car tomorrow. I can't do $500 for a rental a month
