Wont start if you dont hold key long enough?

This happened to me once and it happened to my girlfriend today. When you are starting my truck, if you dont hold the key in long enough for it to start and let it go, the truck will kind of shutter and it wont start for about 10 minutes. It will just keep turning over but nothing happens.

In other words, if you turn the key and let it go before the truck has started, it has to sit for around 10 minutes before it starts.

What in the world is going on?

unless your getting grinding noises like somethings mechanically wrong and binding the starter I'd say it's just your battery. Idk what year your truck is but my 07 is set-up so I turn the key once foward without holding it and my bcm takes over from there and starts it.

Nope theres no grinding noise. Battery is fairly new.

I also have a problem with the truck going into reduced power mode ONLY on the interstate and ONLY when im heavier on the throttle like going up an incline. Only happens maybe once every month or so...could these problems be related?

Re: Wont start if you dont hold key long enough?

ya you probably have a bad head in that case because mine was like that, it would go into reduced power when the engine was working it's hardest and I would get a misfire code that would pend but not throw a check engine. Mine was also hard to start because it was the intake valves and it was dumping excess fuel in air into 2 cylinders at all times

Forgot to add, before we call it a head issue, how are your plugs/coils?

Just replaced plugs because I thought that could have been causing it.

I'm not throwing a misfire code.

Re: Wont start if you dont hold key long enough?

I am leaning more towards a fuel issue. Fuel pressure issue. When my truck is low on fuel I have to hold the key in the start position until it starts up. This is the BCM's way of not burning out the starter if it low on fuel.

When's the last time you swapped the fuel filter?

Fuel Filter is good replaced it maybe 2 or 3 months ago...

You may be on to something tho...I dont remember if it was low on fuel when it happened to me but it was low on fuel this morning when it happened to my girlfriend.

Do you have a scanner? Any way to pull codes? Might be worth a check to put a scanner on it while you start it up for a while.

Sounds like a passlock issue as far as the not starting, can't help you on the reduced power mode.

Just search "passlock" and you might find a solution to your problem.

Mine only does this when it's super low on fuel. Something in the programming, I think.

Re: Wont start if you dont hold key long enough?

i'm with j-bo and the others re: fuel
our trucks are one touch ignition. for wnat ever reason if the "low fuel" light is on you will need to hold the key forward. any other time this happens outside of the "low fuel" light being on is when i hop in and immediatle turn the key from acc to on. i've gotten into the habbit of turning the key to acc and allowing the chimes to finish out.(about the same time it takes for the fuel pump to prime before starting) in that time i'll get me seatbelt on or w/e and then turn the truck on. since waiting for the chimes and fuel pump to prime i have not experienced the problems explained in the op.

hope this helps
