Check out the heater core

So as most of you guys know I'm replacing my heater core in my 2005 Colorado. I thought I would take a pic and show you how much of a total bitch it is and that Chevy really wanted to screw us on this one. Takes about 1-3 hours to get to the heater core and it also depends if you know what you are doing. I would recommend buying the online repair guide with autozone....its called AllData. Its only a few dollars more and you have better diagrams and instructions. Its pretty much the same software shops use. Its $26.00 for a one year subscription, but you might as well spend a day printing out the diagrams and instructions for yourself.

I'll continue to let you know whats going on with the truck, but let me know if you guys have any questions about the heater core.

Well don't worry guys b/c I was thinking the same thing. What I will do is take pictures of when I put everything back together and just organize it for you. Yeah this is the issue. There was coolant in my evaporator, so the heater core was shit.

Re: Check out the heater core

I know what you're going through. thats why i said on the other thread this would be roughly an 8 hour job. I had to do this with my 99 chevy Blazer. I got the heater core for $26, but it took me and my buddy a day and a half to complete. The dashboard was on my front lawn along with the reservoir for my coolant, the windsheild wiper fluid tank, inner wheel skirt and a bunch of other pieces.

Yeah be resourceful, you guys can get together and work a joint How To!

There is nothing stating the How To has to be done by one member.

Re: Check out the heater core

There's some things missing out of it, but we can add them in.

Removal of the:
hood release
e-brake release
glove box
air bag (it can be tricky)
and Instrument Panel Carrier.

Also I should add in some tips & tricks I picked up along the way. I think we could have a thorough "How To" posted within a week.

Re: Check out the heater core

Well pulled my heater core out and it was literally soaked with coolant. Started to installed the new core and found out that its the wrong one! GM, in their infinte wisdom changed the part. Essentially the new part will work great for you 2008 guys, but for everyone else......you're screwed. The pipes going thru the fire wall are not long enough and the hook ups to your heater hose will not work. Instead, of being 2 different sizes like the original, they are the same size. So GM is taking a look at it and will give me an answer on what to do. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Check out the heater core

Sounds like working on a Chrysler. Always mid-year part changes.

Re: Check out the heater core

Okay here's the explaination behind GM's nonsense. Yes, this was a mid year part change and the design is completely different. In order to install this "new & improved" heater core, you'll need to get some couplers (that you never needed before), new heater hoses to match the new size, and new quick connectors. So here is the jist......GM has their head up their ass & we the vehicle owner gets to pay for it!

My advice.........find the original design heater core. (Found mine for $90.00) You can use your original lines and hardware.

I'm pretty sure its that way for 2006's up till 2008. So you should think of buying a 2008.
