GM 15295272 Catalytic Converter vs. Walker 54480

Ok, so the catalytic converter on my 04 Colorado I5 ZQ8 has been rattling like mad at an idle and driving me nuts. Completely goes away with a little RPM's, but sitting at a stop light, or ideling through a parking lot it is loud and obnoxious. All indications are that an internal baffle has broken loose. Looking at bolt in replacement options, I'm coming up with the OEM GM replacement (part number 15295272) to the tune of about $450 at a discount, or the Walker direct fit replacement 54480 for half that price. Has anyone used the Walker replacements? Are they high flow like the OEM? Good, bad, indifferent? Thanks for sharing your experience.

If your under 80K it should be covered under the emissions warranty.

Re: GM 15295272 Catalytic Converter vs. Walker 54480

First off welcome to the nation!

Now, first thing you need to do is get under there and MAKE SURE its the cat. You could very well be rattleing on the cross member. Or against the frame. Who knows...
get under there when its cold..start her up and get under it quickly and with a glove press against things trying to figure out where the noise is coming from. Once you find out where you can go from there. IF it is the cat, and your out of warranty..you can replace with ANY aftermarket cat at a much cheaper rate bro. Don't waste money on a stock cat. Ask nicely and someone may even give you one they removed. I dunno with todays metal prices though! LOL

But get under there first and see what ya think..wear gloves. Oh, and the reason I think this is the case..when you give it just a bit of gas the engine twist just a bit. When it does the exhaust moves also of course. If its laying on the CM or frame whatever, and you can see it twist away and stopp rattleing, then you have found your problem AND its a free fix. Loosen the brakets and turn the exhaust up. When you do that you tighten the bolts back down and your done.

Well I can say I went with the Walker replacement and 2 years later everything is fine.

The dealer wanted over $1600 to replace both....F that. I gutted the primary and replaced the secondary for under $240

Re: GM 15295272 Catalytic Converter vs. Walker 54480

Thanks for the welcome and the replies guys. I checked it out rather thouroughly by removing the right front wheel liner, unbolting the exhaust behind the cat and running it while crawling all over it. I really wanted it to be a heat shield or an alignment issue, but unfortunately after my time under the truck last night I am certain it is inside the cat. So anyone have a good one they want to part with? Anyone know how/why the ZQ8 cat is different?

If I don't find a good used one here, I'll go for the Walker on 1BADI5's recommendation. Also considered removing it and cutting an access panel in the top to see if I could have the baffle welded back into place, but no idea if that would damage the catalyst or not.

I think I'm going to order the Walker. Do you remember if you needed the gasket for the connection between the manifold and secondary cat?

Thanks!

Yeah but not everyone has access to a welder or the skills.

The Walker replacement, buy it, remove the old and install the new......done in under an hour.
