Front main seal oil leak @ 22,800 miles ( 2012 )

I get under my truck several times a week for a look see . Noticed oil all over the front engine area / steering rack . Cleaned it all by hand then went for short drive . Oil again to hard to tell wear from . Off to car wash / can of gunk engine clean . In just a few short miles after cleaning I found it @ the crankshaft seal . Went by my favorite dealer to show my service guy . She goes in on monday for warranty repairs .

Keep in mind I dont mud / or beat on my truck so I was a bit surprised to see this @ 22 K .

Pictures later today .

This is after 5 miles @ in town speeds

c10950,

I’m sorry you hear you experienced this issue with your vehicle. Was your dealer able to resolve the problem?

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

It looks like a very simple and fixable problem if you are a mechanic. Just needs a new front crank seal which is really not that hard to fix at all. But if you have to pay someone for all your mechanic work be ready to fork over some dollars. This is a simple job at the most that have simple mechanic abilities.

My 08 had the same problem. I parked my truck for a week to work on another car and when I started driving my truck again it started leaking within a few miles. Took it to dealership and they fixed under warranty. The dealership said its quite the job to do but I don't believe them. Looks simple. I only about 50k miles on mine when it happened

At least it's under warranty an won't cost you a penny.

I wonder if it's from lugging the engine? I know lugging it is bad for main bearings, not sure if that save load will hurt the seal though.

Good luck....keep us posted as to how GM plans to take care of this.

Re: Front main seal oil leak @ 22,800 miles ( 2012 )

It has been fixed by my local dealer under warranty . Droped it off Monday morning , and got it back the next day . Dealer/service had never seen one fail before with such low millage .
We all think it was a defect in the seal itself .

The job is quiet involved . Radiator /fan out to make room for puller to remove the engine balancer . I have done this job many times on my own cars/trucks
however they were not under warranty , and had over 100K in millage .
