Project Name
How-To: Remove Your Door Panel

Project Description
Removing your door panel to gain access to your speakers

Skill Level
Easy

Project Vehicle
Make: Chevrolet
Model: Colorado Z85
Year: 2006
Engine: 2.8
Power windows: No
Sun Roof: No

Tool Needed
Phillips Screw Driver
Panel/Window Crank Removal Tool

Project Time
1 hour or less

Project Cost
Effort

A standard, non-power door panel.

First, find the screws and remove them.

Remove the handle trim ring.

Place your fingers slightly above where mine are located and pull up and towards you. There is a small inward bent plastic foot at the bottom of this panel that will require a little finesse.

Remove the window crank.

Separate the plastic shield from the crank with a razor blade or thin flat blade screw driver:

After separating the plastic shield from the crank, use your panel/window crank remover tool to remove the small u-clip that holds the plastic window crank onto the crank gear. You'll need to insert this tool as shown, between the plastic you've separated and push gently in the opposite direction of insertion.

If a tool is not available, use a shop rag with a “shoeshine” motion to release “C” clip on rear of crank and remove

Being gentle will result in not losing the small u-clip and having to go to an auto parts store to buy replacements...although, if you do lose the u-clip, rest assured they can be purchased, 8 for $1.99. If you use this method, the u-clip should slide right out the top of the crank and into your other hand.

At this point, my camera stopped working, and I needed to get things apart so I could finish before dark. The panel is very simple to remove, however. Starting at the top where the sail panel was, gently pry outward towards you, moving your hands down and separating the panel from the door. You will feel resistance, this is normal, continue to move your hands downward until you feel a "sticking point." This is the first of about 4 push-pins. Pull firmly towards you and this pin will pop out. After the first one, you can use the panel removal tool as your assistant for the last few as you work your way around the bottom of the panel and back up the other side.

After you've loosened all of the push-pins, push the back of the panel up and flush with the window; at the same time, do this with the front. Some people find it easier to roll the window down first, I, however, prefer it up.

Your door panel should now be off, simply reverse the steps to put it back on, aligning the top rear of the panel before putting the front in place and easing the top back into the track.

Putting The Window Crank Back Together.

The u-clip will go back in with a little effort, make sure you are aligning it as I've shown, on the opposite end of where it clips in, there is a small pin that will not allow you to put the clamp on the wrong way...that's not to say it can't be done incorrectly though. After putting the u-clip on, slide the plastic shield on and position in relation to your other door handle, after you've put the panel back on of course, and push it on until you hear a click.

Re: How To: Remove Your Door Panel

old hot rodder trick

to remove the door handle.....

take an old rag of somekind like a dishrag

holding the rag at each end, work the rags long edge down between the scuff washer and the handle. when this is accomplished the middle of the rag edge will contact the window crank post.

Pull both ends of the rag downward slightly with a back and forth rocking motion...the clip pops right off.
