A 355nation How To presented by
Zeuce

Project Name
How To replace your alternator

Skill Level
Moderate

Project Vehicle
Make: Chev
Model: Colorado
Year: 2006
Engine: 3.5L w/AC
Power windows: yes
Sun Roof: No

Tools Needed
10mm, 13mm, 15mm sockets, 3/8 rachet, screwdrivers, dielectric grease

Project Time
1 hour or less

Project Cost
$300 ish or so for a new Alt and some sweat

Step one and this is the most important step, Disconnect your Battery. Remove the serpentine belt. You will see a hole for a 3/8 rachet in the tensioner body. It helps to take note of the belt routing too

Then remove your drivers front inner fender plastic. You will gain access to the lower mounting bolt and connections. Itll look like this:

Disconnect the power wire and the harness connector.

Remove the lower alternator mounting bolt.

And then move to the engine bay and remove the two top alt. mounting bolts.

Now position the alternator away from the block so you can gain access to the engine support bracket bolt located just in front and below of the fuel line.

with the rear bolt removed, remove the two bolts and the hold down for the AC pipe and unclip the wire harness retainer from the bracket. Remove the bracket.

For those of you that have the stock fan setup you will have to unbolt the AC compressor from the block (do not disconnect the refridgerant lines) and move it just enough to take the alternator out the back and through the fender. For those of you that have an Efan like me its a little simpler!
rotate the alternator as shown and with a little wiggling of the AC pipe, it comes right out the front

Make sure your replacement alternator has a pully with the same number of grooves, then just do the reverse to install your new Alt. I suggest a dab of dielectric grease on the harness connector on reinstall. The part number for the part I happened to use is in this pic.

LOL do you think the mud had anything to do with it!!!! LMAO only 48000 kms

Re: How to: Replace your alternator

Good writeup. I found that pulling off the battery gave plenty of room with my I4 to pull the alternator out the side there. I already had the battery box out and a redtop Optima in its place, so it was quick.

Re: How to: Replace your alternator

Nice write up. I had to do this on my truck at 35k miles. The DIC was showing CHECK VOLT or something like that. Turns out one of the fingers in the alternator was cracked and at high RPM's would short to the case, making a squeeling noise over 4500 rpm, and voltage would bypass the regulator. I'm lucky the 20+ volts I saw on my meter didn't kill a lot of stuff on the truck. The dealer refused to warranty it, called my driving "abusive" and said bring it back when you have problem driving like a normal person. WTF right?

I did not go through the fenderwell, but this method does have some easily noticeable advantages. I pulled the upper fan shroud (was able to put the alternator between the blades to pull it out), the factory engine lift bracket, and alternator without having to remove the AC compressor or anything else really.

Nice work!

Re: How to: Replace your alternator

If/when my alternator goes out ::salt over shoulder:: which brand/amperage output would be a good upgrade for an '05 I5 with a +/- 700W stereo amp and a planned eFan upgrade?

I think our oem alt can handle quite a bit I run alot of lights, stereo and toys in the cab and an efan with no probs. I also run a red top too. I think the hood deep muddin Ive been doing is what killed it tho LOL
