Model: Colorado
Year: 2004
Engine: 3.5L

$5.00

Why do we get shocked sometimes when exiting our vehicles? Static electricity is the answer! There is a build up of static electricity in your body and when you touch your door you create a complete circuit, which is why you feel a "zap" when touching the door. The static can build up due to something as simple as moving around on the seat. There are sprays that are suppose to remove static, there's the old trick of touching the car/truck key to the door and even rubbing laundry sheets over the seats to prevent getting shocked. By grounding the vehicle there is a complete circuit to the ground and no static will build up. My research has shown that the ground strap should be mounted at the rear of the vehicle against the frame. Since it has to be at the rear of the vehicle it is hard to conceal but one way to make it less noticeable would be to paint the strap black or get a sleeve for it. This mod will only cost a few dollars and will help you feel safer when exiting your vehicle.

ON my truck the spare tire is removed and there are a few pre-existing holes in the frame.
You may want to drill a hole somewhere else if you want to put it in a different spot ! I cleaned up the area to ensure a good connection and screwed it right in.

Make sure that the length of your strap is long enough to touch the ground. I like the end of mine to lay flat on the ground at the end, but when driving it floats in the air.

The time frame that the strap will need to be replaced depends on how often you drive.
It has been two weeks and mine shows signs of wear but it is still doing the job!

Re: How to: Install A Ground Strap

People and clothing (wool, tayon, and synthetic materials) accumulate static charges, also. For example, Nylon has been found to generate up to 600 volts potential. Simply walking across a carpet floor can generate up to 7,500 volts potential. These charges can discharge through clothing, skin, tools, and equipment as they come in contact with items in the fuel system.

This came from my CDC's, since i deal with Jet Fuel (JP-8) everyday.

Re: How to: Install A Ground Strap

well, this is most commonly used for plant workers that deal with hazardous material everyday... again with truck drivers who transport fuel or other flammable material... but its a nifty way to not get shocked if you dont like it, personally i think static shock is hilarious and funny to shock someone else

One alternative if you have a passenger in the truck. ALWAYS let them get out first. lol.

No where in the how to does it say this is to prevent a death from static shock, blowing up at the pump or lightning strike's so why are you ranting about this?

In my 21 years of driving I have never gotten a shock while getting out of my vehicle. I agree with undead rado would rather get shock than have some ridiculous looking strap hanging from my truck.
