A 355nation How To presented by:

Project Name:
Fluid/Filter Change on 355 4L60-E

Project Description:

Replace your DEXRON 3 and Transmission filter. This is required service to keep you on the road.

NOTE: 2004-05 model year will use DEXRON 4/ 2006 to current model year will require DEXRON 6. Ensure to consult your dealer on the fluid type and proper filter prior to conducting this service. Failure to do so can lead to transmission failure in the worst case situation.

UPDATE: DEXRON 6 can be used on any year 355, but do not mix with other types.

GM Recommends this service at every 50,000 miles.....though I do not recommend going that long.

Skill Level:
Easy

Project Vehicle
Make: Chevrolet
Model: Colorado
Year: 2004
Engine: 3.5L
Transmission: Auto/4L60-E
Power windows: Yes
Sun Roof: No

Tools Needed:

3/8" drive Ratchet
3/8" extentions, 4-6" should be enough
3/8" 13mm socket
worklight, with extention cord(if needed)
Lift or jack and jack stands
Trans Jack is super nice to have or a second set of hands
Container for used DEXRON Fluid
Rags, drip pan, and anything else you need for clean up

Project Time:
1 hours or less. Clean up time might make this longer though!

Project Cost:
$45 USD, AC Delco Transmission Filter kit from Dealer(P/N 24208576)
$36 USD, 5 QTs of Castrol DEXRON VI from Advance Auto
$12 USD, Shop fees on Post, includes disposal of all old fluids/filters

$93 USD and an hour of my time is much better the the Dealer cost of $259 USD, and not having your truck for 4-8 hours! Plus you know its done right!

Fluid/Fliter Change on 355 4L60-E:

NOTE: 2004-05 can use DEXRON 4, 2006-Current model year use DEXRON 6. Please consult with your dealer on the proper fluid and filter if unsure.

Ok, its time to treat your transmission with some of the same loving care that the motor oil gets. Now I just checked and GM recommmends doing trans filter and fluid every 50,000 miles; thats equal to about 12-15 oil changes!!! Thats insane in my mind. The fluid in your transmission is supposed to be RED not black/brown which mine was. The transmission is even more sensitive to old nasty fluid then the crankcase.

I'm at 67,000 miles as of today at the time of the service. I did my first service at 29,000 miles. Once you see the pictures of my fluid and filter you will see what I'm talking about. I HIGHLY recommend doing this service every 30,000 miles MAX. Some of us race, go off road or do alot of city driving, this will kill the DEXRON in a period of time alot quicker then 50,000 miles. So proceed forward with this service as its needed to suit your driving style.

1. First off let your transmission cool off.

2. Support your transpan either with a jack, trans jack or a friend willing to get covered in old DEXRON....better pay well with beer!

Image

3. Unbolt all 16 13mm bolts on the pan, leaving a bolt in place on each corner.

Image

4. Lower the pan slow and smooth. The transmission linkage is in the way, but its easy enough to get around.

Image

Even with an extra set of hands and trans jack it will get messing!!!!! So be prepared and please do the right thing and dispose of all fluids in a way that would make the EPA happy! Most local parts stores have a recycling program!

Image

NOTE: those of you lowered with a JTR low profile transmission cross member, this will be in the way too, but can be worked around easy.

5. Drain out your trans pan of the old DEXRON and clean out. DO NOT discard the magnet seen in the picture; clean that as well.

This first picture shows where I started to clean the trans pan....and then the area that was not!

6. Pull out old filter and discard after draining out.

NOTE: you will have to wiggle it back and forth(side to side) to get it out. The seal that holds it in is a tight seal!

Image

Image

Note the color of the fluid coming out of the old filter...yep, not red as it should be. This is the reason why I say 50,000 inbetween the trans service is insane. (I drive hard and spend a fair amount of time in traffic)

Image

7. Now get back in there and remove the old trans filter seal, its a BITCH to get out. Then clean the surrounding areas of old dripping DEXRON.

Image

8. Install new trans filter seal supplied with kit.

9. Install new trans filter. NOTE: its a tight fit going back in, but not that tough.

10. Reinstall trans pan with new supplied trans pan gasket, and all 16 13mm bolts(7-10 lb ft). Once everything is in place lower truck back to ground.

11. Pull the transmission fluid dip stick and use a funnel to refill the transmission with 5 QTs DEXRON 4 or higher fluid.

Image

12. Let sit, then check your fluid level. There are makers on the dip stick for cold and hot readings.

At this point you have now serviced your transmission with new DEXRON and filter! And best of all, you have saved OVER a $100 in the process! Now you have some more money for LED mods or what ever you please!

Yes, I had to get at least one corny picture of me in there! :lmaop:

Alright guys it complete!

Thanks Scott!

Well thats how I write them, not to insult anyone. But the write should make things easy for the user.

what are the torque specs on the trans pan bolts?.. i'm gonna do this soon.. im at 35k and i drive my truck hard
I will get this information for you! I know that all 16 of those 13mm bolt came off easy!

well done. I just did mine a few months ago. Something you might wanna add to your how-to tho - 2006 and newer all require Dexron 6
Well the dealer told me to use that on my 04, but he also said I can get away with the DEXRON 4.

OK the torque rating on LS1Tech was 7-10 Lb Ft for the transpan bolts!

i think i need to do this service

my truck sometimes revs up in between shifting gears then the power gets to the wheels a second later, the other day it also felt like it slipped while i pulled out of my driveway in first gear, but maybe it was just a loss of traction

is this normal with an untuned tranny? or should i be worried?

#9 ·
I'm not a transmission tech at all, so I will let someone more qualified touch this one.

I know mine was slipping before, but I had it retuned to adjust the line pressure and verter' lock up and its all good now.

#10 ·
i constantly worry about my transmission.

im sure theres a couple times where my tranny has been screaming for mercy, and the stuff that my truck does scares the shit out of me. sometimes i feel like trying to kill my tranny on purpose so i can get a new one warrantied

#11 ·
how did you get the filter seal out the tube??? i did mine a month or two ago and everything i tried i had no luck with, even a pick wouldnt budge it. i figured it was made into the trans since the new filter kit didnt come with one. ever since i have wondered whether or not it should have!

btw, i'd recommend DEX 6 on ALL of our trucks, nothing was changed from year to year, its just an updated formula that works better in all GM trans and its backwards compatible.

#12 ·
Well I went through the same problem, so I said fuck it and left the old one in. Once I put the new filter in, it appeared to have a really good seal. So time will tell, I don't foresee there being a problem.

BTW, THANKS for clearing up the issue with DEXRON compatibility. I figured that the DEXRON 4 would be fine where I drained out DEXRON 3.

#17 ·
My filter kit came with a new one, but I figured trying to take it out I would do more damage then good. So the seal appeared to still be good(upon inspection), so if it was not broken, why fix it:shrug:

Nice write up Jeremy! I will be doing mine when I get back to the states. Also note that most of the time when you take it in to get serviced they will do a reverse flush on the system and replace almost all fluid to include what is in the cooler lines and the majority of the torque converter. I know the shop I used to work at had the machine to do that. Also have to had any problems with the rear output seal leaking? When I was on R&R i put on my new crossmember and noticed it was leaking.
Yeah when I had it serviced at 29,000 miles i had it flushed. And yes my out put seal is leaking some as seen in my pictures. It wil get fixed one of these days, but it does not appear to be losing much fluid at all.

Ok, thats good to know! Thanks.

#20 ·
ok well i think i will just do it all at the same time then. I need to fix my exhaust anyhow while i am under there. I was going to change the seal when i was on R&R but i was running out of daylight and I had no licence plate light

#21 ·
Well if you end up doing that rear seal, do a write up. It will go nicely with this one!

hey guys new on here, did a full oil change on the 05 rado, used all full synthetic oils, new to the chevy truck, all ways had yotas, well back on subject, can our trannsmission use synthetic fluids,I have about 52k on the truck noticing the little slips here and there, will be doing the trans fluids change this weekend, but wanting to know if I can use full syn.on the rado..

Re: How-To: 4L60-E Trans service (Fliter/Fluid) Change

Yeah Todd yours looked alot better then mine for sure!

#31 ·
Well I did mine today, didn't look that bad, still looked a little red.

I have an 05 Z71 4x4 and this is what I have found.

Doing this on a 4x4 sucks bc 5 of the bolts sit right above the front drive shaft and you can not get a socket wrench on them. So my suggestion is to get a closed 13mm ratchet wrench. Second, I did not have a square magnet in my pan, but a 35lb (I think) round magnet in the middle of my pan. Taking the pan out was a pain to, bc the shifter cables held the pan up and the front drive shaft. So I had to pull on the bracket holding the shift cables and slowly pull the pan down, driver side first. Then the other side slid out (and spilled all down my arm) I dropped the pan into my collector container.

Thats just what I found for my 4x4 friends.

#33 ·
When I did mine I couldnt get that seal out either. I used some dental pic tools and was yanking on it and it wouldnt budge. I eventually said fuck it since it was in pretty good looking shape anyways.

as far as the fluid - I did mine at 80,000km and it was still bright pink - looked exactly the same as the new stuff I put in, but mines an 06 that had the DEXRON 6 in it so maybe it last longer than the DEXRON 3 found in the 04-05's.

Also I didnt have a single spec of metal on my magnet.

I was just thinking about this today. I have over 70k on mine and have no clue when the fluid was last changed. After midge blew up his tranny it really got me to thinking.Gm told me about 5k ago that I needed to do the flush and fill, but at 260, I decided to wait. Sounds like the 4x4 is going to be a bitch though. I guess Ill find out what shop costs on base are. Hell while the fluid is out might as well put the external cooler in too. I don't even want to know what the fluid looks like. After those few days in the summer when the tranny hit 250F, I figure it aint going to be pretty.

#44 ·
Yeah 250* for a 4L60-e is really bad; like its going to die bad.

From everthing I have read and been told, the ideal trans temp for the 4L60e is from 175-215* anything above that will cause long term effect or lead to failure!

Hello. I'm about to service my trans and see you guys are recomending useing dex4 or higher. My owners manuals recomends dex3 with H spec. I have dex3 fluid. I plan on serviceing it every 30000. Can I get away using that for now or should I just go buy dex4 or higher. Thanks. 2005 Colorado 4X4 Z71 83000 miles.
