Project Name
How to Install Fuel Pressure Regulator

Project Description
Removing and replacing stock fuel pressure regulator

Skill Level
Easy

Project Vehicle
Make: GMC
Model: Canyon
Year: 2005
Engine: 3.5L
Power windows: Yes
Sun Roof: No

Tools Needed
Socket Wrench
Socket Extension
T30 torque socket
Rag

Project Time
30 Minutes or less

Project Cost
$50-$80 Fuel Pressure Regulator
GM Part #: 88984221 or ACDelco #217-1564

The Fuel Pressure Regulator is located on the front drivers side of the engine. The easiest way to find it is to follow the small vacuum hose from the intake to the top of the regulator (see the picture below). The part circled is the fuel pressure regulator found on '04 and '05 trucks. Starting in '06, GM started using a returnless fuel system and newer engines don't have this part.

I had been smelling gas in the cab in the morning on cold days and throughout the day depending on the temperature. I drove it one day and could really smell gas in the cab of the truck so I stopped and opened the hood and the fuel pressure regulator was cover in fuel.

This is what mine looked like (didn't get a picture of it covered in gas):

or like this (with credits from xkmacx86)

A way to test the fuel pressure regulator is to remove the hose from the top of the regulator that connects to the intake and start the truck and see if fuel is coming out of the top of the regulator. When you remove the hose and there is fuel in the hose the regulator is bad as well.

I bought a new regulator at NAPA for about $60.

Warning: Remove the fuel tank cap and relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing the fuel system in order to reduce the risk of personal injury. After you relieve the fuel system pressure, a small amount of fuel may be released when servicing the fuel lines, the fuel injection pump, or the connections. In order to reduce the risk of personal injury, cover the fuel system components with a shop towel before disconnection. This will catch any fuel that may leak out. Place the towel in an approved container when the disconnection is complete.
Then I used a T30 Torque bit to remove the two bolts holding the regulator in.

Remove the lower hose (the one with the bracket, first) watch when you disconnect the hose as gas will leak out.

Then pull the regulator out, watch out for gas coming out on this one as there is pressure behind the regulator. You can put a rag around the regulator so the gas does not spray every where.

Caution: Clean all of the following areas before performing any disconnections in order to avoid possible contamination in the system:
• The fuel pipe connections
• The hose connections
• The areas surrounding the connections

To install the new fuel pressure regulator the reverse of removal.
Torque Specs: Fuel Pressure Regulator Screw: 71 lb in

This fixed my issue with lack of power. When I step on the gas the truck gets up and goes again as well as no more gas smell in the morning
