The electrical tape scares me.

I would suggest some heat shrink and hot glue. Then tape if you really want to.

I agree... Electrical work should be done correctly and professionally because it is exposed to the elements... Heat shrink, liquid electrical tape, and other methods of correctly sealing up all connections. A New England winter will destroy any exposed electrical connections. Been there, done that, and learned from past mistakes.
