Manual Transmission Fluid Spec?

Does anyone know if 75w-90 GL-4 gear oil will work in our manual transmissions. I found 3 quarts of this stuff sitting out in my garage from when i had my Volkswagen never used. I looked in my owners manual but it doesn't list a spec under the manual transmission fluid it just states "GM Manual Transmission Fluid 89021906"

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid

I'm just wondering since the gearboxes ship with dino oil if its safe to use a synthetic in them any long term effects on seal and bushing swelling causing leaks.

When i used the Amsoil site that's what the recommended fluid to use came up for the transmission. i just want to use it since i already have it may as well put it to use.

The differential spec's this stuff

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid

When I checked the application guide it showed up as the fluid to use. AMS has seal conditioners and other additives for seal conditioning. Yes, use the severe gear in the differentials.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid

Should be a drain plug at the bottom on the side and a fill plug higher up on the tranny

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid

Manual tranny fluid for the transmission and severe gear lube for the differentials.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid

75-90 gear oil in the trans should be correct. The stock stuff is thick as all hell. As soon as I get some cash, I'm going to drain and refill the trans and diff with Royal Purple 75-90 synthetic. Got s'more dino oil to swap in the crank case, one more oil change and I may try out synthetic there too.

That's odd. did a stealership or quick change place "flush" it for you sometime since the factory?

No i'm the Original owner and its never been to the dealershit or a quicklube place for anything. The AMSoil is good stuff though it shifts just like a brand new truck again and its really quiet now too.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid

A few weeks back I swapped out my factory fill with Redline MT-90 synthetic and did notice an improvement in shift quality, especially when cold and when short shifting at lower revs. It's definitely not as smooth a transmission as the one in a 1996 Tacoma that I once owned but it is better now with the change in gear lubes.
