Noisy lifter/valve

OK, so ive pretty much figured out that one of my lifters and or valves is making quite a bit of noise, after going up a notch in oil after changing it, (1030 to 2050) i can still hear this damn thing ticking, so i need to know what im gonna need to do, because i know valve cover gaskets aint cheap, so im wondering if anyone happens to have the part number for the VCG for my 2.8, i know its a great idea to change every valve if i change one, but i just dont have the resources necessary to do so, so is it possible i might only need to just tighten the lifter if i dig in there? other than that, i have a bit of a noisy exhaust from me being down a cylinder the other day due to a bad connection to the spark plug (coil over boot mod anyone?) got it fixed but i just cant ignore this damn valve tick anymore, and i KNOW it isnt a rod knock, or a spun bearing (thank god)
after saying all this, i just need some advice, any is welcome

i normally ran straight 30 for the longest BECAUSE of valve tick, i had 5-30 in there till about 80k

btw, ive brought this truck to the 7th level of hell and returned. its like that Toyota Hilux from top gear. somehow, it still runs, with 143k!

Re: Noisy lifter/valve

Oh my bad, thought you said you lost a cylinder to the boot mod. Oops!

I run 5w in mine, full synthetic in mine. but it only has 109k. Never had any valve clatter. Thank god! Well hope you figure it out bro!

Re: Noisy lifter/valve

Try some Marvel mystery oil it could just be some carbon build-up, and get 5w30 back in that engine before you block up an oil passage and then throw a main bearing. Thicker oil in new engines is a bad idea even if there is an issue, the tolerances are to tight and it will most likely cause more issues.

Re: Noisy lifter/valve

well out injectors are quite noisy, but if you can get me some info i can narrow it down

Where is the noise located (top) (mid) (bottom)

Does noise increase, decrease, or no change with rpm increase

does noise increase, decrease, or no change with engine LOAD increase

does noise increase decrease or no change with engine warming up

Just buy 5w30, from my experience I've only seen more issues come from tossing a thicker weight oil into newer engines. With older engines this was an accepted method because motors had bigger oil passages and looser tolerances so it could easily flow, newer engine's have a lot tighter tolerances to reduce engine noise and smaller oil passages with more complex routes through the motor.

Even if the thicker oil quiets the noise a little, it still won't change the fact there's an issue it will just band-aid for a short period of time. If you are misfiring the damage will be in the valve seat, if not then it's either the guide, spring, or a slight bend to the valve. Your definitely going to have to tear it down if you want it solved, it's the only way to be 100% certain.
