3.5L manual trans?

Just curious, has anyone thought of swapping in a manual transmission into a 3.5? Is it even possible? Would the 4 banger trans work, or what about one out of a full size?

Re: 3.5L manual trans?

They made it with the 5 speed from the factory...they're hard to find though. Would likely be as much work as swapping a V8 to the 4L60E based on the research I've done (looked into the manual swap two years ago and it was a LOT of work). Don't think anyone's really done it either so there'll also likely be unknown hitches to snag your progress/wallet...I'm sure it's possible but if a V8 swap will be cheaper and easier I'd sooner go that route.

I have the 3.5 with the 5 speed too. I think it was an option from 04-06.

Re: 3.5L manual trans?

I think you could still get a 2wd 3.7 with the 5 speed in 2007...didn't they still make the Extreme trucks in 2007 with the 5 speed? I don't know for sure, but I think up until 07 you could get the 3.5 with the 5 speed in a 2wd truck or a 4x4 truck that wasn't a crew cab with the off road package. I think it was available (though very rare) with non Z71 crew cab trucks, and extended and regular cab trucks with the Z71 package. I'm sure someone else will chime in...hard to know for sure as 3.5 5 speeds 4x4 trucks are so rare to begin with.

Re: 3.5L manual trans?

I know the clutch and flex plate are different sizes between the manual trans if you have a I5 its bigger and the I4 a little smaller.

This also leads me to believe that the flywheel might be different between the engines.

Re: 3.5L manual trans?

the hardest part would be finding an ECM from a 5speed, unless the auto ecm's could be tuned for the 5speed, I know my 5 speed ECM has all the auto tables, but all set to 0's per hp tuners. but the hole in the firewall is there, and other than the wiring harness and ecm issues it would be plug and play for the mechanical side of it.
just caught ur a crew cab, I have no idea how that will effect drive line, hopefully someone else knows, but i'm not sure on the drive shaft length difference if any from auto to 5speed.

You could get the 2wd crew cab with the I5 and 5 speed, so as long as those are a one piece they might work. I'd personally rather do a 5 speed on my truck than swap a V8 but I still think a V8 swap will be easier...and when I eventually go SFA the V8 will handle large tires better.

Re: 3.5L manual trans?

i would like to propose if anyone wants to try this i'll be more than willing to give up my 5speed for an automatic. You'd have to be 4x4 and 3.5 because i dont think a 4cyl cpu would run a 3.5.

Also, aren't frame sizes all the same between crew and extended cabs? That's why you lose the foot of bed. Am I wrong on this?

Re: 3.5L manual trans?

same here, have a factory 5speed and love it..

the Colorado 5speed is garbage in gearing, throw distance.. and feel compared to the S10 5speed.. but its still better than an auto..

I HAVE A 5SPEED FORSALE IF ANYONE IS WANTING TO TRY

Output shafts are different and tailshaft housings are different between 2wd and 4wd but can be swapped out.
