CNG conversion kit?

Anyone running their trucks on CNG? I found a company that sells kits, they seem to be simple enough to install.

HOME CNG conversion kits cylinders tanks

They interest me because I drive anywhere from 200-750 miles a week for work, and I could recoup the initial cost pretty quickly, fuel is $3.60/gal ish and CNG is $1.99/gal.

I'm mainly concerned about if I can damage my engine by running it on CNG, I've read some places that you should have hardened valves/valve seats and a few other things.

If anyone has any useful info/input I'd love to hear it, Thanks!

Re: CNG conversion kit?

Wow!! $1.99 a gallon for CNG is extremely high! It was 79 cents today in OKC.

Any engine built since the 80's should have hardened valve seats ---- this is a non-issue.

Good luck in your project!

Re: CNG conversion kit?

CNG is a lot cleaner fuel than gas. Check if your state gives tax credits for the conversion. Here the credit offsets the conversion cost.
only downside is you will have a HP loss with CNG

CNG conversion kit?

Aren't the valve seats in the 3.5 not being hardened properly the problem with the 3.5? If so wouldn't that lead to problems? Only bring it up because he has a 3.5

Re: CNG conversion kit?

The only problem is that to get any range from it u have to get a big tank and that eats up space big time

Re: CNG conversion kit?

Natural Gas should be given more preference. It is significantly less expensive than gasoline. The cost of natural gas can go as low as $0.64 a GGE or Gasoline Gallon Equivalent.

Re: CNG conversion kit?

Yeah it's a pretty compelling concept. There is a company in Canada called Westport Innovations that created a number of conversion kits for large diesels (tractor-trailer, heavy-duty equipment etc.). The problem here is that we're just developing the infrastructure to make it feasible. Apparently there is a loss in power/fuel economy, but this is largely offset by the reduced price in fuel. I believe Ford offers a Superduty that can be ordered with dual fuel (LNG, Gas) that works well. Another hurdle to making it feasible is tank size, like olds88 mentioned. Once cryo-storage technology is available you'll be able to have plenty of fuel in a compact size. Really, it's a great idea for vehicles as it's a plentiful fuel and it burns very cleanly.

Re: CNG conversion kit?

Running CNG in my 06 for about 1.5 yrs.. Minimal power loss, my mileage is better with CNG, oil stays clean. Our CNG is $1.66 per gge. I need a valve job not because of cng because the motor has 200k.. Converted myself using mycngguy.com, DO NOT USE HIM!!! No service after the sale. The Polish manufacturer won't talk to you either. Steep learning curve. I would like to raise my comp. ratio to burn the cng better, Honda uses 12.5:1 but I would like to stay low enough to run hi test pump gas too. New to forums and such (hell I'm 60), I'll be looking for info on upping compression, any info appreciated. I'll share any info I have.
