| Re: C4 Vette Clunked??????? I am an AFL-CIO retiree, not from the auto industry. I lived in MI during the heyday of the muscle-cars, went to college there, and saw the importance of the manufacturing industry to the local economies in small towns and large cities of the Midwest. My best friend in MI works for The General at Warren, MI, the home of the GM Design & Tech Center. He's eligible for retirement this year, but there are no jobs around comparable to what he makes now after a career at GM. He's very versatile. He has done prototyping in the auto/RV industry on three continents. He spent a year in Korea recently teaching the nationals there the software that is used in the industry by The General. Sadly, the State of MI is in a downward-spiral because of the auto industry's fortunes as of late. People are walking-away from their homes because no one is buying them at a reasonable price. Let the lender sell it to some bottom-feeder who buys multiple homes for far less than what was owed by the last householder. That's what is happening, now, and will continue to happen until the manufacturing sector is able to re-establish itself. How many new cars do Wal-Mart greeters purchase? None, at $10/hr.! The auto industry gave good-paying jobs to factory workers who bought homes, new cars, second cars, took vacations, sent their kids to college, and who bought vacation homes in more-rural areas on one of the lakes dotting the MI countryside. Now the manufacturing base is eroding, cheap foreign labor and the end of tariffs is taking manufacturing jobs away from our country. Where are we going to get our munitions to sustain our defenses-China? Korea? Singapore? India? The Cash for Clunkers gave our withering auto industry a shot in the arm. It isn't the final answer, but from reading the comments from the heartland of families who likely have generations' of financial commitment in the transportation infrastructure, including sales and service, there is a deep appreciation for the income generated by the sale. Mark my words, some graduate student at the Harvard Business School is probably already studying the economic benefits and costs of the program. I can't recall the last time so-little did so much for the economy. Here in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area we had a branch of the US Interstate system that cost probably 1/4 of what was spent nationally on the Cash for Clunkers. The impact of that roadway improvement is localized whereas the C for C was a nationwide effect. Apart from the mortgage interest exemption and the higher-education deduction, the middle class has little to benefit from the federal government's spending. Yes, I know, Social Security (if you live long-enough), defense, federal payments to state and local governments (CDBG's, Medicare, Medicaid, DoT, etc.) but usually it's Big Business oriented. "Trickle-down" didn't work in 1981 under Reagan, and the budget additions occurring now will be inherited by our grandchildren's children-it's called "generational accounting." The bottom line, we got a shot-in-the-arm for our manufacturing that has allowed many families to take advantage of federal monies not normally-available to them. I say, "thanks for the down-payment on my fine new GM truck," and when can we expect another example of pump-priming for Middle America that is as-successful? Take your best shot. Oh, and no 'text language,' incomplete sentences, extreme political blathering in-defense of your parents' party, talk-radio talk-points, or other parroting. Speak from a point of personal reference why you think the Cash for Clunkers program was (or wasn't) good for us! |

| Nation Citizen | Re: C4 Vette Clunked??????? hmmm, all the people who had an "older" car they owned outright have now traded it in for a new vehicle AND a new loan from the bank which they'll probably default on like they did with their home loans. why do people think its a birthright to have a new car, a new house, and free healthcare?! Just because they were born a human in the US, they seem to think the country owes them a living. Why does everyone need help nowadays. Are people that incompetent that they can't even forge a living for themselves.....what happened to that strong, independent, industrialist spirit that was uniquely American?! ![]() Shit.....At this point in time its so ridiculous how lazy people are that's is actually funny. Well I'm out, there's Arab yearlings that need breaking and the government won't do it for me. |

Well stated! Its all comes back to living beyond your means! If your buying extra cars, vacation homes and taking expensive vacations.....you should have a nice nest egg to cover the lifestyle you have established for yourself. If you did not set up that responsible nest egg first, that was irresponsible period and you deserve to loss it all! And now it time to pay the piper! If you were not prepared for it, well thats your problem! But you know what I'll end up paying for it....yeah I pay taxes too! Its too easy and irresponsible when times get tough you can walk away and fuck the banks and tax payers. That all roles into the banks jacking up interested rates for those of use that pay on time and taxes going up to bail everyones ass out! If you signed that 3 or 5 year ARM morgage so you payments were cheaper, but know 3-5 years later you morgage payment would double or triple...then your stupid and deserve to be homeless no excuse! I have no mercy for these people nor will i ever. I grew up fuckin piss poor and know the value of a dollar. When I got back from Iraq I was going to buy a new house and car for the wife, I had the money. Instead I paid off every single bit of debt I could. My wifes job is not stable like mine. So in the event she lost her job we would be covered. Thats being responsible and not living beyond my/our means. I have a job I'm locked into by contract for 11 more years. I will buy a home when things are stable, btw I have a credit score thats well over 750 and theres a reason for that too. I'm 30 years old and more responsible with money then people twice and half my age. So everyone can stop fuckin crying, step back and figure out what really important....needs or wants. Being a flashy baller is all fun and games until the income stops coming in! Sorry son we are going to lose it all bc we had those nice vacations, big house with a pool that we didnt need. Now we get to live with grandma and drive her into the poor house bc I wanted it all! Get real and stop being stupid!

| Static Scraper | Re: C4 Vette Clunked??????? Yea financially universal healthcare is better then our current system. Myby its not the way to go maybe we should do some TARP and insurance reform first then if its still fucked go to universal. I cant wait to see what these people would say if they got laid off from their jobs and lost their health insurance and had a medical emergency. I bet they would change their tune. |

| Nation Elite | Re: C4 Vette Clunked??????? my girlfriend did the cash for clunkers a couple of weeks ago but there should be a line drawn between the cars that are really junk.... and the cars that are in fairly good condition should be sold or even donated to a family that needs a vehicle wouldnt that help to stimulate the econo...... and im glad katie got rid of that damn nissan..... id rather work on a ford any day.... she had a not rusty but rotten 1995 nissan pathfinder most of you guys that live where you get snow know what they look like now a days.... it needed brakes, shocks, trans, ball joints, u joints and so on and so on..... oh and the muffler fell off on the way to the dealer shit..... but now she has a 2009 mercury mariner fully loaded its a nice car and it gets 26 mpg so what the hell....

| Static Scraper | Re: C4 Vette Clunked??????? agree 110% but if they did that the same people bitching now would bitch even more about socialism and that the govt is taking their stuff and giving it to other peole bla bla bla. It would have been a better program that way but the backlash would have been 1000X worse. |
