Re: Worlds first 2004 3.5 Crewcab ZQ8 5 speed

I bet with 4.10's it would feel torquey.

How's the mpg?

I'm happy mine came manual. I think I'll always have to have some sort of vehicle with a manual.

and remember, having a manual is also like having a theft deterrent, at least in the US. lol

I'm very happy with 3.73s, 4.10s would be pointless and nothing more then a 93 octane eater. I will still use it on roadtrips.

MPG's.......not a clue. I have only been driving around town and yet to get it on the highway since the swap. The 5th gear ratio in the MA5 is lower then what was in the 4L60e, so I'm not really going to gain anything on the highway; I might pick some up around town where I can pick a gear.

Yeah I have no had a manual vehicle in ages and glad I made the swap for sure

Have you ever driven a stock 5-speed truck? IF so how does the shifter compare with your hurst short throw?

Glad to hear, Jer. Amen on rev-matching! I rev-match (read engine-brake) every downshift. My goal is get 100,000 miles on the original brakes, lol. From what I've read of other members' experiences, doesn't sound like a hard thing to accomplish.

The throws are a hell of a lot shorter and feel great; well worth the money!

The install is easy as hell. I'm extremely pleased with the supplied shift stick; its perfect in placement for me. The straight stick would be a bit of a reach, unless if you have long arms.

@1BADI5 I mean I'm 6'1 and i sit pretty close up to the wheel. I just would prefer something around the same as stock. I might piece some stuff together from them and see how it goes lol.

I'm 5"8" the shifter length is not that far off from the OEM shifters.

When I'm in 2nd or 4th my elbow rest on the center console with my hand on the shifter....perfect for me.

This is like the 4th time I've read thru this whole swap and it keeps making me wanna swap even more! Why can't I have something else to drive besides the truck!

Been running numbers on a rear ratio calculator page trying to see how the truck would act with it compared to the auto :D I really wanna do this to make the truck a little more driver friendly and more fun

Well the great thing JW, is I've done all the hard work and research. SO if you got all of your parts, fluids and tools together..... it could be done in a weekend if you had a couple buddies there were good in the shop. There are a bunch of different things that can be done at the same ie one guy on the interior, one on the trans and a floater to do things like drop the driveshaft and wiring.

I knew I had tight timeline in the shop then had to work around family and work.

I stripped the interior down ahead of time (saved me at least 3.5hrs in the shop, yet the truck was very much still drive-able). Also getting the hole in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder was a huge time save in the shop...again, done ahead of time

Oh I know and I appreciate the hard work you did. I've already priced the parts I'd need from GM as well as the trans and pedal assembly from the local junkyard. Just trying to see if it's feasible to get it done in a day or two. I hate having to depend on someone else to get around. Might be able to make it an all day thing if I did some of it beforehand like you did then.

I would recommend 2 days...... if you go to fast you miss things....or you get burned out.

Start it Friday after work and should be done Sunday in time for the work week.

Are you going with a SPEC clutch or the Hummer H3 route?

Idk I was looking at the spec clutches. I haven't looked into the H3 clutches to be honest. Anything you know about it off the top of your head?

The 3.7L H3 clutch is a little bigger than the Colorado clutch (280mm vs 265mm) but still fits the standard 5cyl flywheel. It uses a semi-metallic disc and can be found for fairly cheap (note this pn includes both the pressure plate and the friction disc):

It is assumed to be an upgrade over the stock 3.5L clutch. Nobody is really sure how it compares to the Spec Stage 1 though.

Thanks for that I was doing my own research as well and ran up on the size difference due to the greater torque of the 3.7

Unfortunately if/when I do this I'm gunna be looking for a clutch for the 2.8 unless I'm able to swap a 3.5 or find a 3.7 for a good price
