New here, but have been scouring the site. A LOT of good stuff here!

I just bought a nice used 2012 Canyon, Reg cab, 4wd, 3.7l, Z85, that has stock 235/70r16 tires. Rims are stock GMC 16x6.5.

It is actually a very clean truck. Not seen any off road time at all(just based on known history and how everything looks underneath), but that is going to change.

I bought it specifically for my 'hunting' and 'weekend' rig. I drive a work truck pretty much exclusively(2023 Silverado 2500 4wd) and will only be driving this truck occasionally, and most of it will be down to the National Forest.

On my old truck(2005 Z71 Silverado 1500) I had just P-rated Falken at3w and those trips/roads/trails ate the tires up big time. They lasted for a while, but the ground I drive on is super rocky and hard. I always carried a couple of spares.

The tires currently on this truck will meet the same fate if I leave it as is. So I am looking at my options, been reading a lot on here and other places, and have landed on lt235/85r16.

Couple of reasons why, main one being I will be able to use my stock rims. Second reason is I found a really good deal on some. Not worried about the ride quality because driving my work truck has got me used to a stiff ride. I wanted to give the truck a bit more 'aggressive' look also and less like a city/town truck.

So here is one question I have though. I have 3" between the current tires to the front and back of the front/rear fender well. The tires I am looking to put on will be 2" larger in diameter. So that means 1" on either side, which should still give me 2" of clearance right? Since they are the same width as the current tire I cannot see where rubbing at lock should be an issue.

*Also wanted to add, I have thought about the 245/75r16 also but thought the 235 would have less rolling resistance(mpg) and give me a little bit better clearance. Not to mention I have read where the 245's will rub at lock? I am also not opposed to putting a small suspension lift on if it is really needed for tire clearance and all.

Any thoughts?

Greetings and Welcome.

Nice looking truck!
If you go wider, you may want to think about wider rims.
I just put 235\65 r16's on my 2012 as the dealer I bought my rig from took off the steel rims and put an 8" wide rim on it. I always felt the 225\65r16's were a bit tiny, and the stock 215\70r16 tires that were stock on my truck wouldn't fit the wider rims. The 235's don't rub, but I'm in a stock 2X4 WT.

Thanks and Thanks!

I have been cruising the internet again today looking at the options. I have been a Falken supporter for a while, had a set of 10 plys on a work truck that I drove everywhere and never had a single flat or other issues. But the P rated version on my old personal truck just wore out too quickly and the off roads I traveled literally tore chunks from the material.

I'm really being tempted at the moment to try a set of BFG T/A KO2 in the 245/75r16. Other than price I have heard a lot of good things about them and they are touting themselves as having a good rep on rocky terrain. I think they would definitely make the truck look like a 4x4. It also looks like they would fit on the stock rims. Discount Tire's website says the rim width range is 6.0"-8.5"

Well, I decided to go with Maxxis Razr AT-811 LT245/75r16. I know they will be a bit bigger and a little heavier, but I cannot see how they won't work well. They will give the truck a good 4x4 look and are supposed to be made extremely well for offroad/rocks. That is honestly my #1 over looks, but looks come in a close second.

Sharp looking truck!

I guess the title of the thread could be changed a little since I will not be going with the 235's. 245's are not much bigger, but I bet the tsidewall tread will make them look bigger.

I also hope that I do not have to get wheel spacers for them to fit. They really are not that much bigger than the stock tires that came on it. I think it is like 2% diameter and 3% width.

If they do not fit then I will either do a small lift or get the smallest wheel spacers I can.

I only had to use spacers to get the 1500 wheels to fit
