I kind of screwed myself a few years ago when I installed the Air Doc cold air intake. I replaced that squarish piece with one that had the same diameter opening as the Air Doc to remove that as a choke point in the airflow. To attach the air box to the snorkel I went back to Lowe's and picked up a rectangular to round PVC transition that was close, but not quite the right size. I then used a heat gun to shape the plastic to fit and used a lot of silicone to seal it because I got a little too frisky with the heat gun. When using the heat gun, be very careful as the plastic of the air box is thin and melts easily.
Great idea! I will give that a try

Just a warning, the plastic of the air box will absorb heat for awhile without doing much of anything.....then it will suddenly turn liquid. Be very careful or you will be using a lot of silicone like I had to.

Well, a bit of a setback this weekend. I had forgotten that I still needed to finish installing the other two bolts for the flex plate/torque converter.

I hooked up a battery to crank the motor and it wouldnt budge.

Wrenching down on the crank pulley, the motor wouldnt spin as well.

Researching online, I wondered if I didnt get the torque converter seated correctly.

So I removed the transmission and checked the torque converter. It was good.

I then looked at the started and noticed that the starter gear was still engaged to the flywheel.

More testing revealed that it was the starter binding to the flywheel that was preventing the motor from turning.

I purchased the engine to transmission adapter from QuickDraw Brand.

Chad, the owner has been great. He responded to my text (on a Sunday) with some things to try.

However, after enlarging the hole on the adapter in an attempt to move it away slightly from the flex plate, the starter gear is still binding.

I am awaiting next steps from Chad.

Well, I received the other adapter and replaced it over the weekend. Took about 4 hours. Tested and had the same starter binding issue. :-(

I text Chad from QuickDraw with the results.

He called me today and walked me thru some testing.

We found the issue, and it was a rookie move on my part.

Two things we identified that I was doing wrong.

#1 I was using heavy gauge 6 gauge jumper cables to test the starter. I replaced with 4 gauge wire going from battery to starter and ground. I will have 2 gauge wire as a permanent solution.

#2 My battery while new, didn’t have enough cranking amps. I have two identical batteries as I am doing a dual battery setup. I added the second battery into the testing.

It worked! No more issues cranking the motor over and no more binding.

I wanted to share my mistake as I hope someone can read it and not repeat the mistake I made. Chad said he has run across this before, jumper cables aren’t good for testing stuff like this, especially with a diesel.

Below are some pics I took of the adapter replacement. While my second time doing it, it was still a daunting task!

I am kicking myself for this mistake, cost me weeks, now to get the transmission mated up again.

Always look forward to your updates. Can’t wait to see the finished product.

Don’t feel too bad about any “rookie mistakes”. I’ve done the same kinds of things….it happens to everyone.

Thanks!

Do you happen to remember the length of the cables that came with your transfer case shifters? I am getting ready to order and they come in varying lengths.

I went with the 48” cables. They have worked out well for my application.

Sorry for the delay in updates, I have been laying low recovering from another surgery on my shoulder.

I sent the 6l80e to the transmission shop to ensure I didnt damage the front pump when I first installed the transmission behind the r2.8.

I am not sure I seated the torque convertor correctly so I want to make sure all is good.

In the meantime, I am working on my dual battery setup and other various small projects.

Due to space limitations in my garage, I needed a portable welding table.

I found a Dewalt welding table where the legs fold up and I can hang it on the wall when not in use. Has a hook on one end and a welding ground clamp on the other.

Here is a link off of Amazon if anyone has been looking for something like this: Dewalt Welding Table

It worked out great while welding up the base for the dual batteries.

Also picked up this Evolution saw that cuts thru metal like butter, and no sparks!

Good luck with recovery! Short term pain for long term gain and all that.
I was just reading up on that crate R2.8.
I'm floored at the price of the engine when that's half the price of an entire Foton Tunland! That 2.8 is a nice engine with lots of headroom on power.
I got the chance to drive one several years ago... 5 speed manual and it was a blast and ridiculously good fuel economy without needing cat piss .
Nice choice!
