Can someone tell me how many ABS sensors the 2009 colorado has, locations, if I can change them with out having to take it to the Dealer, the dealers here are murder, $100.00 bucks just to scan it, cheaper for me to order the sensors 1x1 and keep changing them till i find which is bad, and help with pictures or videos would be appreciated, thanks

Thanks for the reply, but do i have to remove the hubs to change the abs sensors, i have a 2009 colorado, isnt the ABS sensor on the 09 and up attached different from the the older models, i think all the links you sent are for a 2006

Front Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (2009-2012)

Removal Procedure

Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning

1. Within the engine compartment, disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (1).
2. Release the wheel speed sensor harness connector from the wheelhouse.
3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

5. Release the wheel speed sensor harness clips (1) from the suspension upper control arm.

6. Release the wheel speed sensor harness grommet (1) from the mounting bracket.

7. Remove the wheel speed sensor harness bracket bolt (1).

8. Thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting area of the steering knuckle of any dirt and debris.
9. Remove the wheel speed sensor bolt (1).

Note: Do not pry or lever against the wheel speed sensor to remove.

10. Carefully remove the wheel speed sensor from the suspension knuckle by pulling straight upward.

Installation Procedure


1. Install the wheel speed sensor to the suspension knuckle.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

2. Install the wheel speed sensor bolt (1) and tighten to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

3. Install the wheel speed sensor harness bracket bolt (1) and tighten to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

4. Install the wheel speed sensor harness grommet (1) to the mounting bracket.

5. Install the wheel speed sensor harness clips (1) to the suspension upper control arm.

6. Install the wheel speed sensor harness connector to the wheelhouse.
7. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (1).
8. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
9. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle.

Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (2009-2012)

Removal Procedure

Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning in the Preface section.


1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel speed sensor bolts (1).

3. Remove the wheel speed sensor (1) from the drum brake backing plate by carefully straight outward.

4. Release the wheel speed sensor harness retainers (1) on the rear park brake cable.
Release the harness from the retainers.

5. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (1).
6. Release the electrical connector and harness retainer (2) from the frame.
7. Remove the wheel speed sensor assembly.


Installation Procedure


1. Position the wheel speed sensor assembly to the vehicle.
2. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (1).
3. Install the electrical connector and harness retainer (2) to the frame.

4. Position the wheel speed sensor harness to the retainers (1) on the rear park brake cable.
5. Fasten the wheel speed sensor harness retainers.

6. Install the wheel speed sensor (1) to the drum brake backing plate.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.


7. Install the wheel speed sensor bolts (1) and tighten to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle.

Normally if the sensor is bad or going bad, the hub isn't far behind. Just replace the hub IMO.
This would be good advice if we weren't talking about a 2009 truck. The '09+ trucks have a different brake setup from previous years and the wheel speed sensors are not part the of the hub like they are on the pre-2009 models.

Here's a picture on the pre-09 setup. Compare this pic to the pic I posted on the '09+ setup.

Thanks a million for you detailed reply, now i only have one last question, for the front it list 2 different part numbers for the sensors, my truck is an 09 crew cab colorado z71, will either of these parts work, also does it reset itself or do i have to take it to the dealer and have it reprogrammed

You might want to consider purchasing a Tech-2 clone diagnostic tool for a few hundred bucks before spending a lot of cash on unnecessary parts that may or may not fix the problem.
