So I got an aftermarket deck a kenwood and I was wondering if I have to get the chime harness thing or no. Could I just cut off the stock harness and wire up the one that came with the radio I don't care about the onstar or chimes. I do have the auto start that locks and unlocks my car would that still work? Will it mess with the computer any if I just hardwire? I got a 2006 gmc canyon crew cab. I'll post some pics of the stock harness and new deck harness.

Hmmm I can only post the stock harness pic it's those two pieces and the one for the new head unit just looks like a normal harness.

Best buy sells the harness that plugs into that but doesn't do the chimes. It's about a $20 piece....or it was 4 yrs ago when I did mine that way. I hate the chimes

Can you help me find which one online i live on an island in alaska so I don't have much options haha. I want to make sure it's plugs into those two plugs because I've been looking around and I just find ones with that big main plug.

Don't cut....to much harm. Plus cutting is stupid.

Yes the GMRC and GMOS chimes retention harness are expensive, but it's important. The HU by GM is part of the serial bus port. When you remove it you need to wire it back up so it doesn't cause other problems.

Do it right or don't do it at all, kind of thing.

I know everyone says you need the big expensive one that keeps the chime but I have had the cheap crappy one with no chimes for about 4.5 yrs and have had zero issues with it. Only issue is no on star which I could careless about anyways.

On my last truck which was an 08, I hacked and spliced. No problems for 2 years. The harness makes it so much easier and cleaner.

Glad you have a harness, hopefully it's the Chimes retention module, and not a Walmart harness by Scosche.

However, there are way more negative posts than there are positives posts. The stereo is part of the computer system, when that is cut out, most have a problem with stupid electrical stuff. I can't define what goes bad but I am calling it stupid stuff because it usually affects things relative to the BCM.

The more you read here, the more you'll hear of odd electrical gremlins in general (not just because of the HU).

To those who have it working properly, I say good for you. But the basic suggestion is to not bypass the BUS system. I'm not knocking it because I have not installed using the 'old fashioned way", so I can't speak from experience.

I had good luck with both harnesses I purchased from Cructhfield when I bought my decks.

There is a significant amount of splicing involved the first time you do it, but if you do it correctly you won't have issues (at least I haven't in 3+ years on 2 aftermarket decks).
