Brake upgrade 09+ brakes(front) on 04-08 355s

Alright, this will be the official discussion thread for this topic

* The rotors on the 09+ models are said to be 1" larger in diameter.

* Other known facts are that both 04-08 and 09+ models have twin piston calipers and 4 channel ABS.

* The V8 models/09+ ? also have yaw control.

So topics or issues that are needing to be looked into/researched are

* Spindle/knuckles- are they the same?
* Are the hubs the same?
* Are the Calipers on the 04-08 and 09+ models the same?
* Are the ABS wheelspeed sensor differant bc of the Yaw control?

So I guess we need to research some part numbers or find 09+ model to look at and compare. Open for information and discussion! Please include part numbers/vendor and price if you find them in your post. I will try to centralize the information in this first post

New Update as of 21 SEP 2012

We know this all works now, but I got some information on hardware from the dealer yesterday.

The bolts that hold the caliper bracket in are longer then the 04-08 bolts. You can buy them from GM or pick them up at your local hardware store (M14 x 2.0 x 36), you'll need 2 for each side, so 4 total. Make sure they are either Grade 8 or higher.

The Copper crush washers for the brake line, well same as above, get them from GM or pick them up at your local hardware store (10.3 x 14.5 x 1.61). You'll need 2 for each side as well, total of 4.

Re: Possible 355 V8 brakes on a non-V8 model

Brakenit-

"I just emailed GMPartsDirect to see if they have a part # for just the abutment. This is something I've been wanting to research for a while, if I can get just the abutment then I'll probably order one and take some measurements. The '09 rotors are only $48 each so if you only have to replace the abutments then it would be a pretty cheap upgrade."
Re: Possible 355 V8 brakes on a non-V8 model

Like I said in the other thread, all 09's have the upgraded brakes it's not just V8 models. That's why they stepped up to the 16" wheels being standard. The new brakes wouldn't fit under a 15" wheel. The yaw control may be for all 09's as well, I think that's just the Stabilitrak that came standard on all of them.
Re: Possible 355 V8 brakes on a non-V8 model

When I was looking to lift mine back before the new kits. I tried the spindle deal. But per the yards that I talked to, they were not interchangable in the guides they use. I was not gonna buy a set to just find out. Just fyi I guess.

Ok, I didn't catch that.

Time to do some Editing then..
Re: Brake upgrade 09+ brakes(front) on 04-08 355s ???

the abs sensors are different on the 09+. that's a reason the 04-08 lifts won't work on the 09+ trucks

They are mounted different but are they different part numbers?

At the next Chapter meet, we can do a side by side on my truck.

Found a used 09' caliper with abutment bracket on eBay, it's on the way. :kiki:

Re: Brake upgrade 09+ brakes(front) on 04-08 355s ???

With the difference in size, it will cause a difference in the speed the rotor is turning as compared to the smaller one. Apply this relationship to the speed the rear is turning. Will this cause a fault with the ABS? However speed is determined of the sensor at the back of the hub. I may have answered my own question here.
Do all the 09's have 17 inch wheels? Will rotor clearance be an issue?
It would be nice to get some detailed pictures from an 09.
Re: Brake upgrade 09+ brakes(front) on 04-08 355s ???

Read the thread and think before you post please. The rotor is attached to the hub, the hub is attached to the wheel. The abs sensor is a part of the hub. Changing rotor size does not change the RPM it spins at, even if it did the abs sensor reads wheel speed in general. I already said 16" wheels were standard on 09's. 17's came on Z71's, 18's on ZQ8's.

Re: Brake upgrade 09+ brakes(front) on 04-08 355s ???

Here's some pics I have of my '09 front brakes. Not sure if they're helpful or not. The shots were taken when I installed the QA1's, so there not really "brake" pics.

Well the calipers are differant, the wheelspeed sensors are differant, but it looks like the newr calipers mount in the same location!

The pics I have at work:

Re: Brake upgrade 09+ brakes(front) on 04-08 355s ???

I think the actual caliper may be similar to the later year Trailblazer calipers, the only picture I could find of one is on eBay of a TBSS. They're at least similar in design which would lead me to believe they're manufactured by the same company, which would probably be PBR in Australia. I don't know if the regular TB's and the TBSS share the same caliper, I'm pretty sure the TBSS at least has larger rotors. The abutments for either are probably different than ours I would assume.

Looking on EBC's website they list the same part #'s for pads for the '09 Colorado and Trailblazer.

Re: Brake upgrade 09+ brakes(front) on 04-08 355s ???

I know looking at parts descriptions/listings isn't an ironclad way of gaining information but I would almost have to believe this eBay listing. It shows a a few vehicles sharing pads with the 9-10 Colorado, 06-10 Trailblazers being one of them.

Re: Brake upgrade 09+ brakes(front) on 04-08 355s ???

GMPartsDirect is tricky on getting part number or prices for that matter.

You can find the same part number in differant sections, but the price was differant. Or something is labeled for either 2wd or 4wd, but share the same part number; if its the same part number why have another listing?
Re: Brake upgrade 09+ brakes(front) on 04-08 355s ???

Their catalog definitely isn't 100%, but with so many damn part numbers I guess it's not surprising.
