2008 Colorado Extended Cab Airbag Warning Light.
Truck Specs 2008 Colorado Extended Cab 4X4 Z71
Jumped in the truck last Monday, fired it up and the red warning light for the airbag system was lit up on the instrument panel.
Shut the truck off, waited 60 seconds, in case it was a “glitch in the airbag system”, fired the truck back up but airbag red warning light was still illuminated. Activated OnStar, OnStar ran diagnostics and confirmed airbag system inop with two faults ( Drivers Seat Belt pre-tensioner failed and Drivers Seat Belt pre-tensioner wiring open or shorted).
Review of the wiring schematics show the wiring for the drive Drivers Seat Belt pre-tensioner running from the Cab to the Ext-Cab door. As these wirers transition from the Cab through a boot to the Ext-Cab door, I pulled the boot back to expose the wires and SHAZAM! Broken pre-tensioner wire… As I looked closely to the wires in the boot, all the wires, (speaker, door switch etc.) were all fatigued from the day to day use of opening and closing the Ext-Cab door.

Called up my local Chevy dealer which is a sponsor of our Covette club and the Parts Guru pulls up the harness in the system P/N 15214393 and has it available.
Below are a few pics of the replacement and make damn sure you pull the fuse on the airbag system before doing this harness replacement, even with the key off, the airbag system does store voltage to deploy the airbags.
This task to just less than 3 hours to perform with multiple beverage breaks!
Gaining access to remove the harness, all this will be needed to be removed from the Cab to the Ext-Cab door

Replacement Harness

Disconnect harness from speaker, door switch seat belt reel then detach harness from Ext-Cab door.

Pop cab grommet and feed door harness into cab to disconnect the two wire harness connectors.

For installation, follow steps in reverse, start truck and red warning light with go through the normal test sequence then extinguish.
Hope that this info will be useful,
Cheer,
Vetteman

Vetteman, thanks for the well-written/photo-ed post. I had the same problem and just repaired it this morning. The wire broke inside the rubber boot, and the part number for my harness is different (P/N 20806141). I bought the replacement from GMPartsDirect for $35 plus $7 S&H.
Truck is 2010 Colorado Extended Cab, 2WD, Z85

I have the same issue. Does anyone know how I can get the correct part number for 05? Or does it matter?

Also can I just buy some wiring and extended myself? If so, what gauge should I use?

I think that most of the guys are repairing the wires themselves rather than replacing the harness. The wires for the seat belt pretensioner (airbag) are .5 mm (20 gauge). The speaker wires are .35 mm (22 gauge).

One question; what's the reason for different gauge for speaker wires? I'm not very knowledgeable with electrical stuff.

All fixed! I added extra wiring to all the broke wires. I even cut and add wiring to the only one that was attached. I did use the 20 gauge for all the wiring including the speaker wires. It did work, unless someone thinks this is a bad idea. Please let me know.

If the lights are out and everything works, you should be good to go. At least if it happens again you will know where to look.
