Hi everyone,

Hoping some of the knowledgeable people on this site can assist me. I parked my vehicle in the driveway after moving it around my property and now I can’t get it started. Haven’t been able to start it after 5 days. Before this I have never had an issue with stalling, rough idle, etc.

2008 Canyon with the 3.7L 5cyl, auto, 4wd, 100k miles

Any suggestions on what to diagnose next would be greatly appreciated as I’m not sure where to go from here

Here is what I’ve done so far:
  • Scanned codes. Nothing
  • Checked oil. It was low (Very bottom of dipstick)
  • Charged battery/Jumped truck
  • Added gas
  • Check fuses/relays for fuel pump and starter
  • Confirm I can hear fuel pump
  • Check fuel pressure (52psi)
  • Remove air filter/resonator and noticed some oil, probably about an ounce
  • Cleaned throttle body as it was very dirty
  • Sprayed starter fluid into intake, didn’t help at all
  • Replaced spark plugs as they were in need of a change
  • Confirmed spark. When cranking I would only see a spark about every 1-1.5 seconds. Is that normal or should it be more frequent?
  • Unplugged battery overnightno luck
  • Checked if engine was seized, can still rotate it manually
  • Confirmed I don’t see the padlock light during cranking (or at all)

  • Next steps:
  • Check compression
  • Passlock relearn
  • Replace sensors? Maybe crankshaft and camshaft position sensors?
  • Try and diagnose a slip in timing

So you sprayed starting fluid into the TB, but it would not even run for a few seconds on that? Then it should not be a fuel problem. You verified the plugs are getting spark. Yeah, timing is next. Low compression shouldn't make you stop all of a sudden, unless its catastrophic! Passlock cuts the fuel, but it should still sputter on starting fluid.
Im not sure what the spark frequency should be, that is a good point you bring up. I see you tried also jumping the truck, so it shouldn't be a weak spark issue, but it is worth double checking the battery power.
A dirty MAF sensor usually results in a poor idle, not an abrupt fail to start. But worth a cleaning too maybe.

I am still not able to get it running.
I have a check engine light but no OBD2 scanner I’ve used can pick it up

likely need the dealer to diagnose unless anyone had a suggestion on whyI’m not able to read the codes? PCM issue?

no sputter at all when spraying starting fluid. I’ll be trying a new, fully chargebattery tonight
MAF is cleaned using MAF solvent, no help unfortunately

I will look into timing/cam/crankshaft position sensors.

I was able to revive mine with an ignition switch. Big difference for me though is it would run on starting fluid. And it gave me a code to throw parts at. I have seen some treads that chased their no start back to the cam/crank sensors. I hope that gets your truck sorted out. Keep us posted. Hopefully you can help the next guy.
