Just curious because I have an 04 and 05 with holes in the frame, but my 2011 and most other later years seems fine so far around here. Did anything change for the later year frames or is it just a matter of time until I will likely have the same problem with my 2011?

(I have only owned the 2011 for a couple years but it has always been a Midwest truck. I started fluid film treatments right away)

I took a compressed air blow gun with a shop vacuum hose stuck in the rear bumper end of the frame and blew all the crumbles rearward where the shop vacuum sucked them up. I made sure to unclog the bottom frame drain holes that were clogged. The frame seems to rust from the inside. I couldn't believe how much had deteriorated from inside the frame rails. After getting ever loose piece out I used a fluid film gun and sprayed oil inside to help with anymore deterioration.

Yep, all the same. The only difference is the environment and maintenance. You can greatly extend the life if you get on the maintenance before the corrosion gets too bad. As BackInBlack noted, it comes from the inside and is not always apparent until it is pretty advanced. Treat your frame inside and out, and it will hold up. I developed my annual routine based on advice from BackInBlack, and so far so good. I think my chassis will outlive the electronics.

I got a 380,000km oil field used 2005 3.5L with surface rust on the frame, inland. Salt seems to kill the spring boxes very quickly. So watch the contact points.

Thanks for the tip. I just blew out my frame as best I could, it was definitely needed!

Mid process of replacing my frame on my 2012 L5 4wd ext cab. Refreshing front and rear suspension too. In retrospect, discovering the frame was gone was kind of funny. In Pennsylvania, we have annual safety inspections. Any holes in frames or body, and it has to be fixed or at least covered. Just last june my baby passed with flying colors. Then in Jan I was going to go on a run to Florida to see my son and my friend I have known for 70 years. There was a rattle underneath so I have my mechanics check it out. They put it up on the hoist, something creaked and they ran for the hills. Never seen my man move so fast. They discovered the frame rotted through in a couple of places.

Just curious if you'd care to respond in the comments, my rust through was on the driver side. The few other frames I have seen rusted through are also on the driver side. .What about you?

Every one I've ever seen is like that.... Just a matter of time.

Every Crew Cab I have seen around here it is the driver side. Its kind of weird though we have a 2005 extended cab that the passenger side is actually worse that the driver side, not sure why
