I am considering swapping out the rear axle for something with 4.10s that I can get an aftermarket locker in. Has anyone tried this and found an axle that fits fairly well? I would prefer to keep the 6 lug pattern but so far it looks like my best options are going to be a 5 lug since I don't want to have to get it shortened. What has anyone else used?

So if I'm reading your post correctly, you want to swap your rear axle with one from another vehicle?

From what I understand the S10 axle will work, but its 5 lug.

If an S-10 axle will fit, so will an F-body or G-body 10-bolt if you swap the spring perches over... they're also 5-lug though...
Much stronger too. Go with a Moser FTW!

Couldnt you just buy new gears and a locker? I would think that would be a lot easier.

The problem is that no one makes a locker for the Colorado axles and used axles aren't too expensive, depending on what you get.

Any other ideas for a 6-lug pattern that might work?
Easy fix, buy a G80 and some 4.10s:shrug:

I'm planning on swapping the rear out of my truck when I end up with more power than the I5 under the hood. So far a Ford 8.8 housing with custom Strange axles and an Auburn or Detroit chunk makes the most sense. 8.8's are a dime a dozen, and one from a Mustang or Ranger is within 1" of being the same width as our stocker.

That's actually what I was leaning towards but wasn't sure what to do with the axle shafts. You said custom so I assume you're getting new shafts made, any idea how much that usually runs? I don't have any idea. You can get almost anything for that Ford 8.8 but I wasn't sure how wide it was. Thanks for the info!

Strange'll throw a set of hardened 31 spline axles whatever length, whatever bolt pattern you want together for about $400 after shipping.

Strange Engineering P3102 - Strange Custom Axles
does that include shortening the axle tubes??? and is the 8.8 narrower or wider??

there are 2 differant hardbody rears only the larger of the 2 had a locker available when i was into 4x4. im not sure on width though. this would be the best route if the width is right since they are capable of handling 500+hp.

Depends on the application it's sourced from. Mustangs/F150 are almost exactly the same, Rangers are slightly more narrow. Only reason I know is I have a Mustang 8.8 on stands in my garage. ;)
