Help.......my truck continue to accelerate after letting off the throttle

6997 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  AJ4Life
My truck scared the bejesus out of me yesterday! I was on the highway and hit the throttle to speed up to pass a car. When I let off the gas, the truck continue to accelerate for a couple of seconds. It surprised me so much, I press the brakes a little. I accelerated again to duplicate what happened, and sure enough.....it did it again. When I was down the street from my house, i mashed the gas to pass another car.......it did it again! This time I had to slam on brakes, because another car wasn't too far in front of me. It does not do it during slow or moderate acceleration; only during hard acceleration and the truck has to down shift. Does anyone any idea what's going on with my truck? If so, is it an easy fix before I take it to the stealership or mechanic?

Something stuck under your gas pedal? Or a sticky gas pedal?

Get on the floor and push it with your hand and look for any signs of something sticking.
Call Toyota. I hear they have experience with this type of issue. Lol J/K!!!

Stay safe. I would start at the pedal and work my way to the throttle body. I would assume something around the pedal.

I'll check it out tomorrow. It happen last night, and I was too busy today. Thanks!

Call Toyota huh? It would be funny if they could fix it....lol! Thanks boss!
My safety alert, and personal opinion.

When you know your vehicle can easily get out of control, there is always time to investigate. There are very few other things that are more important.
Make sure the throttle body is clean. These trucks operate on an electronic throttle (drive-by-wire). If the throttle butterfly is is gummed up, it may get stuck when you go WOT
^^ What Dan said!

If your Throttle Body has never been cleaned....I could see this happening.

BTW, there is nothing in the owners manual in regards to the throttle body needing to be cleaned, but trust us......it needs to be done about every 24k miles
I'll third the throttle body. When I bought my truck it had throttle issues. The dealership didn't wanna duck with it so they lowered the price. It was a dirty throttle body. I clean it every oil change.
It sounds like a throttle body issue. I had cleaned my 09 Malibu TB in the past and got a bit aggressive on the cleaner due to so much gunk. After a couple of day of being aired out it was back to normal. Like stated before clean your TB and easy on getting fluids in the electronics. I'm sure your flapper is slightly sticking open putting you on cruise control.

Good Luck.
I going with an accelerator pedal issue. The throttle body is motor operated and I think if the motor can't drive the plate to the position that the ECM orders, it will throw a DTC. But, hey, I've been wrong before!
I'm with Byron, there likely something binding in the accelerator pedal.
Cleaning the throttle body can't hurt either.

Get it checked out ASAP, this is a potentially dangerous condition that could harm you and others. Remember that you can always drop into Neutral.

I couldn't really do troubleshooting due to the bad weather lately. It's been very cold, plus it snowed about 4" here yesterday. However I did drive my truck down the street a couple of nights ago. It did not do it then, but did really get on the throttle. It drove just fine. Once we get a little break in the weather, I will take a look. I do have another car to drive, so no worries there. But I would like to get this issue figured very soon. My truck has better gas mileage, than other car (SRT8)....lol!

On another note; I had a check engine light about a month ago (can't remember the code). After researching the site, I took off the throttle body and gave it a thorough cleaning. Code has not return since. So a dirty throttle body can not be the issue. Thanks for all the reply's guys!
Got it fixed! Replaced the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APS136 or 15183948). Good as new!
