Project Name

Project Description
Aftermarket Replacement of stock Strut/Spring Combo

You can see my review of these shocks here >>http://www.355nation.net/forum/reviews/12704-review-belltech-coilover-shocks-12001-a.html

Skill Level
Moderate

Project Vehicle
Make: Chevrolet
Model: Colorado
Year: 2005
Engine: 2.8L
Power windows: No
Sun Roof: No

Tool Needed
Spring Compressor
Metric Sockets 15,17 to name a couple
Jack
Jack Stands

Air Compressor and Impact (Not completely necessary but would be helpful)
Vice Grips or 1/4" socket (for sway bar endlinks)

Project Time
1.5 hours to 3 hours

Project Cost
$500

Any number in Red will mean to refer to the diagram above.

Step 1. Remove the top three nuts (6) on the top of the strut tower. (accessible from the engine bay).

Step 2. Then you must remove bottom shock bolt that is in lower a arm (20) with socket and wrench.

Step 3. Remove top sway bar end link (30). You will need a 1/4" wrench or socket to hold it still while you unscrew the 15mm nut loose. Or remove with 15 mm socket and a impact.

Step 4. Now the shock is free but will not come out until you remove lower ball joint nut (28) and swing the lower a arm down to free the stock strut/spring combo.

Step 5. You will now have to build the Belltech Coilovers as units from some of the parts of the strut/coil shock assembly. You will need to use the spring compressor to take the stock assembly apart. The spring is under tremendous pressure and could make you ugly by busting teeth breaking noses and blackening your eyes.

Spring compressor

Step 6. Once you have compressed the spring you can remove the strut/coil assembly center nut (8). You will need to use a alan wrench and a wrench to remove this nut. When you take your stock one apart pay attention because that is how it goes on to the belltech shocks with the exception on (14) as it won't be used but in its place the belltech piece will be.

See this Diagram for Belltech Coilover Assembly

Step 6. You can now install the Belltech Coilover the same way the stock assembly came out. Install the three nuts (6) into the shock tower first to hold Coilover in place while you install the rest.

Now reverse all steps and double check you have tightened all nuts.

I know this is an old thread, but I just installed mine and I think I screwed it up. Is there supposed to be play in between the top nut and the upper perch? I have the 2 nuts all the way down and there is still a gap until I preload the springs. Did I miss something from the old struts? I have everything installed and actually had to drive it because the shop was closing. I hope I didn't destroy anything. Help!

I would say no but I haven't installed these.
I figured it out. As suspected, I had extra parts. I installed the coil overs way faster the second time though!
Hi guys
I could use some help I have the 12001's and ordered the hardware for strut separately and noticed that the smaller rubber has a white conical bushing that doesn't fit into the strut mount center
I just added the pictures of what I'm talking about. ,,
Is it suppose to be that way do you remove it ,, no matter where the bushing goes that little white piece creates a gap . The whole idea is to leave the factory struts complete as they only have 45k and their still good . Id prefer not to tear them down just to see how that little bushing goes .

Also the bushing with the conical white piece on does that one go on the bottom of the strut mount or on top .

So this morning I checked the lug nut at the top of strut and its different than the sizing on the coil over . Before I move forward with an install has anyone else used these on a 2011 or newer Z85 single cab. I figure any other surprises I can adjust for before the actual tear down and install. Accoring to the site they fit for the 2011 , although on the box it showed it as 2004 - 2010

I know most of these answers would like be answered by tearing down the originals , but again thats what Im trying t avoid.

Thanks Again.

Hello Everyone ,

Its been a while since I tore my factory struts down to figure out where the bushing go on the new one. End result I used the small bushing with the white conical sleeve under the strut mount & the larger one on top Also since the factory nut did not fit the B.T coil over I sourced grade 8 nuts & doubled them up on top.

Hopefully this can help any one else with similar issues in the future.

For those who may need the info , the struts are adjustable on the vehicle and it makes it really easy by raising the front completely , you can actually reach up and do it by hand once the weight is off the front wheels. ( PLEASE BE CAREFUL SEEK HELP WHEN YOU ARE NOT SURE ) . The height for my truck 30.5 approx from the floor to the edge of fender running up the center of the wheels . Attached are pictures of the approx thread measurements using stock control arms. The driver side has less thread left over compared to the passenger side.
Have at it and have fun.

This may be a dumb question. But from what I can see it should work. Can you put qa1 springs in place of the double spring setup in the belltech coilovers?
So was it ever established if the rubber piece with the white conical thing goes on first, or does the rubber piece without the conical thing go on first?...

it the white conical thing used to center the mount?

*Update*...I put these together putting the rubber piece and the white conical thing first, then everything else - seems to be holding up fine.
