Idle question

2116 Views 27 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  colorado zq8
I have a intermittent miss while idleing, hasn't thrown a cel yet,but does get pretty rough.I had the surging before at idle but removed the throttle body and it was nasty. This intermittent idle was happening before the throttle body was cleaned.Would this show up as a code without cel being on.Thanks for any help.

I would start with seafoaming both the top end and injectors. If that doesn't work then I would move on to new plugs.
Thanks ststefan, Plugs were replaced about 2 months ago.Can I sea foam the injectors or does a mechanic need to do this.Seafoaming the top end won't be a problem.

the injectors would be done with seafoam in your fuel tank. I pour a can into my gas tank before every oil change. Don't pour any into your oil unless you are ready to do an oil change.
What kind of plugs?
Did the miss start around the same time period by chance?
Ac delco iridiums, this miss started last week.I poured a can of Seafoaming in my tank Monday.
Those are the preferred plug. Gapping them can cause problems, but not likely it will take two months to form a miss.

I don't have any other thoughts. Sorry.
I didnt gap the plugs, from my understanding they are already gapped.Could it be a fuel filter needing replacing
Plug gap differs fm vehicle to vehicle. Sometimes you get lucky and they're gapp'd to your motor's spec, but not always. Best to check gap every time. Not to say this is your issue, but might want to check your plugs...
Thanks iceman,Will pull them and check.
No problemo...hope you get the idle issue resolved and doing toe Seafoam treatment on upper motor looks pretty simple. Maybe, between the two, you'll get the truck back to good idle shape.
Hope so,it isn't throwing a cel yet.

Depending on when the fuel filter was last replaced, it could cause problems.
It is the original fuel filter, the truck now has 103,000 miles on it.It will be changed today and every 10,000 miles from now on.
With Iridium tipped plugs you need to change the cap differently than with conventional plugs. If you attempt to bend the ground strap part by shoving a feeler gauge in there you can damage the tip.

If the plugs were installed well before the idle problem begun, I'd put revisiting the plugs last.

Use the spray seafoam. You won't risk hydrolocking that way. Plus it's recommended to use the spray version in a vortec designed engine.
Thanks 08 canyon.I didn't gap them because I heard it is easy to damage the tip,and someone said they are per gapped. So with the spray,do I spray it in the throttle body.
Changed out fuel filter and made no differance.Pulled my camshaft position selinoid sensor, looks good,no oil in connector. This was replaced about 2 months ago.I guess coils will be the next thing I will replace or possibly a fuel pump.
Run the premium unleaded? I'd also disassemble the coils and clean the terminal and springs with electronics cleaner.
How hard is it disassemble the coil packs
If it 2as a bad idle i would suggest to get a gm dealer to do a BG service. It will include cleaning the intake, injectors, and a can of BG 44K in the tank for combustion chambers.

My wife's 4runner had a bad idle. Decided to try it out, and it came back good as new on idle.

Since it is just a miss, then I don't have any other advice.
