It has been recommended to me to install new coils when I change the spark plugs.
Is that necessary as a general rule?
Are only the coil wires replaceable on a 5 cylinder, 2012?
Recommendations please..

Replacing the coils every time you replace plugs would be like replacing your hood every time you open it.
Foolish. I will soon hit 300,000 miles on my I5, and never replaced coils. Wont do it next plug change, either.

I agree with TheGrandPoohBah, replace coils on condition. I keep a spare on hand, just in case. What coil wires are you referring to? There are no "coil wires" on the 3.7 engine.

One thing you can look out for under the plastic cover on top of the engine, is the "Vent Hose". It is kind of a crazy "S" shape hose that handles oily fumes and will get mushy and rotten with age. When they get mushy, they tend to crack, break, and leave an oily mess. Auto Zone has 'em for under $10.

234,000 miles on my 07, never had a problem with the coils. Although a few recent threads have me thinking about googling what good upgrades there are. I recall a few years ago "supersparkz" that would replace the springs with some kind of "rod" design? Wonder if those are still around?

My '05 I-5 will be flipping over 300,000 miles soon, I have replaced AC Iridium plugs twice, plan to change 'em again with AC Iridiums again, never an issue. Same original coils. I can't imagine any plugs or coils any better. Never a misfire, plugs looked great each time, anti seize on plug threads and a light dab of dielectric grease on the top of plug and inside the boots. Then we roll on...

I had a 2004 Z71 3.5 and when I sold it, I had 330,000 on the odometer. Original Coils, plugs changed to Iridium at 90K, again at 200K and also at 300K. Ran Supermod's Super sparks from around 150K till I handd off the ignition key.
