Ever since a saw a pic of ahelm3's 2009 LH8 engine I've been curious about the air flow indicator on his truck and why my 2009 LH8 doesn't have one.

@ahelm3

Well, from what I can tell GM had these air flow indicators on the early LH8 motors (2008-2009) and then sometime mid-year of 2009 they redesigned the airbox and eliminated the airflow indicator. Guess this makes the early LH8's even more rare.

Here's a pic of the original first design... take notice of parts #4 and #5.

AIR INTAKE SYSTEM. Fits: CANYON, COLORADO, H3

and here's the 2nd design without the indicator:

AIR INTAKE SYSTEM. Fits: CANYON, COLORADO, H3

My truck was built in May 2009 and and doesn't have the air flow indicator.

I would think that anyone with the LH8 or LH9 could add this air flow indicator simply by drilling a hole in the air box and adding the grommet and air flow indicator. I suspect that the air flow indicator is a visual indicator the helps you determine when it's time to replace your stock air filter or clean your K&N filter.

I thought I read somewhere that only trucks with the optional heavy duty air filtration came with the air flow indicator....regular/standard air filtration did not.

I never heard of a "Heavy Duty Air Filtration" option and the only difference that I can see is the addition of the air indicator. Otherwise there's nothing "heavy duty" going on here.

I suspect that this was just another cost savings thing that GM implemented in 2009. Kinda like the lack of footwell lights, coin holder and silicone inserts for the cup holders, etc.

@Decoy Jay has one on his. I was under the impression that it wasn't all that accurate and as long as someone changed their air filter at the recommended intervals it would never read anything.

If your customer doesn't have a device to counteract what you tell them is time to replace then you can get more customers to pay the price to replace it and make the profit. Thus r3moving it killed 2 birds with 1 stone. Less money to build, and added profit during recommended repairs at service intervals.

GM may not have offered heavy duty air filtration on the 355.....IDK. However, they definitely offered it as an option on full size 5.3L trucks.

When to Inspect the Engine Air Cleaner/Filter

If your vehicle is equipped with an air filter restriction indicator, it lets you know when the engine air cleaner/filter needs to be replaced. On vehicles with a restriction indicator, you should inspect the air filter restriction indicator at every oil change and replace the engine air cleaner/filter when the indicator tells you to.

How to Inspect the Engine Air Cleaner/Filter
(Vehicles With an Air Filter Restriction Indicator)

Locate the air filter restriction indicator on the engine air cleaner/filter cover. When the indicator turns black or is in the red/orange “change” zone, replace the filter and reset the indicator. See the steps following to replace the engine air cleaner/filter and to reset the air filter restriction indicator.
