max charge voltage

hey new here got told about it from a friend.

2006 gmc canyon 2.8l with serious competition stereo

i am trying to figure out what the highest i can set my voltage to beyond 15.3
ive heard two different answers 15.3 is max and 16v is fine and not to worry but i wanna make sure.

i run lithium banks so if i can charge at 15.8v this would be ideal thanks for the help if yall can

The 2006 GM Service Manual information for the charging system is 12-15.5 volts. Voltage above 16 volts will turn on the 'Battery' light and the 'Battery Not Charging' message. Voltage above 19 volts will set a P0563 code.

Don't know what you can get away with in real life. Maybe someone else has that info.

Thanks for the info. I am not trying to go above 16v. Ideally 15.7-15.8v on a daily would be what I'm looking to accomplish. I just dont want to mess up anything with the truck.
The high output alt i have currently is pcm controlled but im upgrading to a 400amp alt with a terminal block with a blue box external voltage regulator to by pass the pcm so battery light will ultimately be on after that.
Curious to what the outcome of running high voltage would be on the other electronic in the truck. ive seen service manuals say their max for other vehicles set by manufacturer yet were able to take the higher voltage with no issues. Not sure is the manufacturer is just playing it safe for the consumer with those stated numbers of "max"
I haven't seen anything official regarding these trucks. The fact that there is a P0563 DTC indicates that they assumed that 19 volts might happen. The same goes for the 16 volts for the light. Still, you are correct to be concerned. Modules are expensive to replace.

Well seems like based on that info it could be fine running 15.8v with no issues fingers crossed. I wonder if anyone has had real world experience with running that much voltage in these trucks. thanks your responses.
Welcome to 355Nation. I quit changing the factory stereo setup back in the early eighties. They started sounding good enough for me and/or some one else would like it better and break in and steal it, trashing the dash as they went.
Do not leave it that high for very long. As the battery warms up the charging voltage is reduced. You can charge a cold battery at around 15 volts but as it warms up the BCM reduces the voltage to compensate. I would also not like that kind of voltage on the rest of the electrical components. PCM and BCM and radio are just a few of the items that you could easily smoke, not to mention lights.

Nominal charging voltage for lead acid batteries and no computer control is 13.8 to 14.2 You can go beyond that for shiort periods of time if there is a computer monitoring and making adjustments as necessary. The computer has the ability to even shut down charging when it thinks the battery is fully chsrged and light electrical load. It also shuts down charging during cranking (startup).

I am using cmax lithium cells for my battery bank. so lead acid charge points isnt a issue. Cmaxx is fully charged at 16v. id like to charge to 15.5-15.8v. i will have a adjustable voltage regulator so my daily driving i can set it to a lower 15.3v which seems to be safe so far as thats what im charging at currently. im trying to figure out the max voltage the other components like pcm etc will be able to handle with out frying. i can understand the other stock electronics may not like the high voltage but like what is the safe zone, how long can it stay that high etc.
