Re: My Project (New Best 1/4 Mile)

Little something just to update. I ordered a new muffler that's better suited for boost, but I decided to try it out with the 3'' catback.

It's a BlackWidow Venom 250 3''. I think it will do much better than the flowmaster super 44. Plus this is 14ga SS. It sounds very good actually!

Re: My Project (New Muffler)

Decided to upgrade front sway bar end links since I found a good deal on them. Maybe I'm imagining it but it feels like it goes over bumps smoother in the front.
On my '05 (175k) I've rebuild the front end twice.
Especially the 2nd time, I replaced every soft part, the (leaking) steering rack, almost every single piece.

The more you freshen it up with new parts, the tighter everything becomes and the closer you get to the new-vehicle feel.
I really hate it when a vehicle I enjoy (355!!!) becomes all sloppy and loose, especially the steering.

I do have plans in the future to freshen up everything. I'm slowly collecting bushings, tie rods, etc. Everything is actually in pretty good shape but I'm sure it could use some new parts.

I got a good deal on the belltech rear sway bar. It should show up Thursday. I got tired of trying to reduce body roll by using helper springs on the leaf packs. It helps cornering, but it sure does make the rear too stiff.

I also used some silicone spray for the body mounts. It did quiet down most of those squeaks!

I went to the opening day at the drag strip. I extended my slapper bars so the rubber bumper hits the spring eye and not the spring.

I got my best time yet: 16.3999. My previous best was a 16.6958. Converting to ideal conditions at sea level and comparing to my previous best corrected time, I went from a 14.904 to a 14.762.
I think a little better launching technique and the slapper bars working correctly helped me get my best 60 foot time as well: 2.3200.

Several years ago I had a persistent squeak-squeak on my '05 that was really annoying at parking-lot speeds. I went nuts looking for it for a year.

Someone here at the Nation suggested I look at the frame-body mounts.

Bingo! There is a metal tube running through the center where the bolt passes through.
It was all rusted. At the time I removed them all and cleaned the corrosion with a wire brush in the tube and from the bolts, then applied lithium grease. That took care of it.
Had it not been for whoever here suggested it, I never would have thought of it.

Then in 2012 I bought fresh body mounts.
(on installation I greased them though the center totally with lithium grease)
Wow, what a difference it made. It changed the way the truck feels, making it feel more like new. The mounts are part of the chassis tuning. When they're old they don't respond the same way. You may want to consider trying it.

I can't wait to get the fronts done. My plan is to replace pretty much everything suspension wise when I do the fronts- new bushings, ball joints, tie rods, etc. I've been slowly collecting all that I need when I find good deals on quality parts. I don't have a reason to replace anything yet because it's all still good.

I'll probably replace the rotors and hubs while I'm in there. A while back I picked up a new set of EBC Yellowstuff pads on Amazon for 25 bucks. I thought about buying them at that price in "bulk" and making a profit but I didn't feel right about doing that. When I bought the one the price immediately went back up to $110.

I had a chance to really test out the sway bars and rear QA1's. I went to a work weekend at a church camp I grew up going to and there is a nice stretch of twisty mountain road.

It performed awesome!

I had set the Qa1's on 4 (maybe 5? I forget). I had planned to set them higher for the "testing" but I forgot. It was flat a smooth. I could have pushed the truck much more but there are a lot of blind corners, but for the ones I could see if there was a vehicle, the truck just wouldn't let go of the road! No tire squeal or anything! I'm actually pretty impressed with the goodyear wrangler armortracs.

I also think I can put a 275/60r15 all around on a 15x8 wheel with +19mm offset. I'll need to do some measuring.

The truck is doing well at almost 108,000 miles. I went on a trip this weekend and the truck averaged 32.20 mpg. I also had to jump a brand new Ford this weekend at the camp.

I really need to grease the body mounts. They are squeaking something awful. I think I'll clay and wax the truck and get those body mounts greased.
