Hey guys, new member. First post.
I got a 2009 Colorado LT, Ext.Cab, 4x4, 2.9 4-cyl, automatic, 76k miles, original owner, Inferno Orange.
Last weekend, I changed the passenger front diff axle seal because a oily residue had formed around the base of the CV axle and a local shop told me it was likely a failing seal, but they don't do that kind of work as a matter of policy.
Half a week later, the residue is back and I'm trying to figure out what i did wrong. I don't have the time or luxury to easily get back under there again until the weekends. No drippings or puddles (yet), just a visible residue.
I used a SKF seal, pounded it in as far as it would seemingly go using exhaust piping. I cleaned the hole and put dielectric grease around the outer lip, new gear oil on the inner lip, and new gear oil on the shaft, as per How-To's on this site and the Haynes manual. Then buttoned in all up with the original axle and a new SKF wheel hub for good measure.
I don't have a way to post pics yet, but the oily 'ring' before and after formed around the base of the CV shaft where it butts up to the diff housing. And I'm not even enitrely sure if it isn't just residual oil being flung out from when I greased it to reassemble. The old seal definitely looked worn when I popped it out.
