OK, so no go on the hard reset of the radio.

That other thread got me thinking. When you get a fail, see if tapping on the speakers in the doors has an effect. Or opening and closing the doors. What you would be looking for is a intermittent ground fault in one of the speaker wires.. According to that other fellow, when one speaker grounded out, all of them shut off. Long shot, but its another free test. We are running short on good ideas, time to try some bad ones.
Thanks for staying engaged with my problem Dragon. No, doors opening and closing, tapping speakers doesn't seem to have anything to do with it. Here is something odd though, a common chain of events seem to be part of it, but maybe not I will pay more attention to it from now on and count starts. It seems that if the radio and charms don't work on the mornings first start, after a few starts and stops, just normal driving to store and home then post office and home, stuff like that, after a few of those it starts working, might have nothing to do with it but I will pay attention to that now.

While searching for information on how to unlock GM factory radios I came across a similar issue like you are having . The information stated that that radio amp is bad . After chasing this problem for as long as you have with no resolution I suggest this . Go to carstereohelp.com and ask for their opinion . It's worth the effort to get a professional opinion on this .

Yeah that is what we are thinking too, but just trying to exhaust the free stuff first. The unlocking info will be handy if Coco needs to replace the head unit. Some of the more expensive Ebay units come unlocked, allegedly. If getting a used unit from another vehicle, it will likely need to be programmed at the dealer to make it work. Not sure how much that would cost, but it is hard to get a dealer to do anything above an oil change for less than $90.

Two more things you might want to try . Pull the radio and hook it to a 12 volt power supply and at least one speaker . If you get sound at least you know the radio works , however it may only display the locked message , hard to say if this will work with a locked radio . Find an unlocked radio that is known to work and try it in place of your radio , or buy a Wallmart radio for $16.00 bucks and try it . You can always return it for your money after you try it . The point here is to determine if the radio is at issue or if it's something other than that .

Made an appointment to have the radio checked out and maybe replaced at the local Maui Certified Sounds, everybody that I have talked to that has done business like them and I liked them after talking to them too. They will take the radio out and hook up another to see if it works and see if mine works outside the truck hooked to power. They said they can get a simple radio like mine is, no CD or OnStar or Bluetooth for around $80 and a PAC interface to keep the charm system for around $120. So weird though, today on first drive no radio or charm, drove it later and it all worked perfect. frustrating.

So its cold blooded sometimes. :) Doesn't like waking up in the morning.

May as well get a radio with BT, if you have to get a new one. That way you can stream tunes to it, or your podcasts of choice. Whatever.
They will definitely try to sell you new speakers too. it may not be in the budget this time, but get some recommendations and listen to some in the shop. May be a fun DIY next year to get the most out of your new radio.

Let us know.

Been a while and I haven't done anything about it but like you say Dragon it is cold blooded. So I suppose that it is the radio plain and simple. Comes on after being driven a while.

To add to this conversation and confusion: I have a 2017 Colorado. Since the first year I bought it, the radio and ALL audio (including chimes and turn signals) have occasionally gone out. If I restart the vehicle, I can often get the audio back, otherwise it turns on again on its own at another time. I’d say audio works 90% of the time.
I also have intermittent Engine Light and Service Security lights, which come and go, seemingly without cause, and have ALWAYS occurred since I bought the car. Unpredictable, and they don’t interfere with driving.

Yours sounds like a voltage/ground issue Mike. Have you been able to pull any codes on it to help?

Im assuming it never cooperates when you take it in to the dealer to have them fix it when it was under warranty

Hi Dragon08, and thanks for the quick reply!

You're exactly right about it not cooperating anytime I brought it into the dealer when it was under warranty.

I'm ignorant about pulling codes: how do I do that please?

Mike
p.s.: Oops! I was thinking of my wife's car earlier - the Chevy Colorado is 2015 (not 2017).

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? Cause my truck is doing the same thing
If you are asking me the answer is no, I am living with it, it always comes on after either driving a while or a few starts and I'm not big into the radio anyway, 100,000 plus miles and everything else is good so I'll let it slide for now anyway.

I know this post is going back 6 months, but I just want to add that I just purchased a '21 Colorado and I am having the same issue. Luckily I am under warranty, so I'm bringing to the dealership to get it figured out. If anyone is interested, I will update on the findings.
