How durable is the rear axle in these trucks? I have heard pros and cons, Considering a 8.8 swap out of an explorer in to my truck.

Pros of 8.8 are 31 spline stuff factory , disc brakes factory , 5 lug ( a plus for me)
Cons (Loss of Abs)

Anybody else done this swap...

Isuzu Dana 44 swap keeps the same bolt pattern, can be found in the same width, disc brakes... Your abs reads at the trans for the rear so as long as the speedo is accurate and it has a rear axle it should work

mid 80's F bodys had them as an option for rear disc's.
a little stronger than the 9 bolt rears, if you set them up
with good parts. we blew one up on a 85 Z28 with a built 406
w/700R4 +2800 converter. it had an Alburn locker and pro gears.
I would go with the 8.8 Ford, my 2 cents
