Bulletin No.: 07-02-35-006E
Date: December 02, 2008

Subject:

Clunk or Knock Noise Heard and/or Felt Through Steering Wheel or Brake and Accelerator Pedals (Replace Lower Steering [Intermediate] Shaft)

Models:

2007-2008 Chevrolet Colorado
2007-2008 GMC Canyon
2007-2008 HUMMER H3

Excludes H3 V8s Sold in North America

Includes H3G Vehicles Built PRIOR to Serial Number 422858 (LHD) / 425990 (RHD)

Condition

Some customers may comment on a clunk or knock noise being heard or felt through the steering wheel and/or brake and accelerator pedals. This issue may be more prevalent in hotter temperatures.

Cause

This condition may be caused by a slip/stick condition in the lower steering (intermediate) shaft.

Correction

Important: When replacing the lower intermediate shaft, follow service procedures found in published Service Information (SI). Be sure to ALWAYS:

^ Keep the hub straight when removing/attaching the lower I-shaft to the upper steering column.

^ Pin the steering column using the J 42640 - Steering Column Locking Pin in its straight position prior to removing the lower I-shaft. Keep the steering column pinned until after the new lower I-shaft is installed.

Failure to perform these steps could result in a mis-alignment of the upper steering column to the lower I-shaft and cause DTC C0710 and "Serv Stab System" message to occur.

Yes, the bumper to bumper warranty will cover this repair.

FYI... This is a TSB, not a recall, so it would not be covered outside the B to B warranty.

so is there a difference in this part over the stock one so it wont do it again? Has anyone tried and noticed a difference? Mine has been doing it for a while and I want to order the part tomorrow. Thanks.

Put my new steering shaft in last friday. Took me roughly 10 minutes lol. The stock one was toast at 39k miles. Hopefully this new one doesnt do the same thing... But as of now all is good!

My '05 2wd pulled that on me a year or so ago. Found an article at a full size forum that had a greasing process that worked wonders. There is a post at colorado canyon fan site. Pull the fender liner, the intermediate shaft upper coupling, pull the shaft and boot up and pack with grease. DON"T let the steering wheel spin or you will break air bag parts.$$$$. Reassemble. I will try to get the link for the fan site and attach.
