sub wire freezing?

1448 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Supermodulation
i am having a weird problem. one day when i went into the garage which is not temp controlled to start the colorado the amp turned on for just a second and died. so i went through a few steps like running the remote wire straight to power to get anything nothing new fuse nothing even ran the truck with the heat cranked and windows up for about a hour straight thinking the amp was to cold. i ended up going inside my basement with is temp controlled got a new power wire hooked it up and was good to go. so i ran that wire and just threw the other in the garage. well last week went out again to check the battery and again the amp came on and turned right back off.

i am stumped only thing i could think is the fuse in the power wire is freezing. i have never had this problem with any other vehicles but they all have always been temp controlled

If the connection is being made then temperature is not an issue. More than likely some connection is cpming loose
Get a test light and test the power feed at the amp. Should be hot.

Check the remote turn on. Should be hot when radio is on.

A more likely theory than 'my fuse and wires are cold' is that the HU is not energizing the remote turn on circuit properly.

Or the amp is failing since you did remote feed directly to the battery and the amp still failed to turn on.

How much gas did you burn up by idling in the garage for an hour? And were you in the garage for that time period (lots of c02 building up)? How cold was the garage? Is Tennessee experienced a hard freeze right now (extended period of time below 32 degrees).
i have the remote wire hooked up to my fusebox not the radio.

and yes we hit single digits for about a week straight and no i went in the house didnt feel like dying that day

maybe try running your remote wire into your HU harness... I could see that maybe causing a problem done that in the Sdime I used to have and once I took the HU out and ran the wire to it everything worked without a problem
Why is your remote wired to continuous power?

He's referring to an after market part. Not factory installed
You may need one of Supermodulation's auxiliary wire heaters.
:D

The only way low temperature can effect wiring is if a connection is iffy.
Otherwise, for the wire itself, the lower the temperature the better.

In general, same for electronics.
Electronic equipment is happier at lower temperatures, down to a point.

Computer-based stuff, like navigation systems, doesn't do well at temperatures below zero or so. Operating them in lower temperatures won't hurt them, but they may not function correctly.
How cold was the outside temps?
In the cold, metal shrinks and gets smaller, after awhile of many repeated circles especially if there are two types of metals being tied together. They cause the connections to become loose. I see it all the time with my lab QC temperature chamber.

Another problem is cheap electronics or poorly engineered will have a narrow temp range.

What is your total sub speaker ohms.
Are you less than 2 or 1 ohms. It's also possible that your triggering the amp foldback circuit.
Measure the sub ohms when this happens.

I have had a couple of week long single digit temperatures

My amp has got some age on it. It has a bad connection or a short it because one sub makes loud feedback most of the time. If everyone thinks the amp is the problem it will be a good excuse to get a new one.

As in my head unit i have the remote wire ran to a fuse in the fuse box to let it be a switched 12 as i didnt want to pay big money for the adaptor that makes one. Also i did try to jump it off by running the remote straight to the 12V power on my amp with no feedback from it so i would think that that would take the remote wire out of the equation.

I just dont understand why when i switched power wires it worked for a period of time before the next freeze we had. I thought about the possibility of a loose wire so i actually removed all wires and put them back to make sure they are tight with no result

Ya sounds like the amp is on it's last legs. You should try re-solder flowing the PCboard.
In mass production they use a technique called wave solder. basically looks like a water fall of hot solder.
Problem with that is, The places that carry more amps don't get enough solder and eventually break loose.
alright thank you i will probably just break down and get a new amp once spring comes to stay 70 one day 20 the next right now. i actually have a question for you supermods i will pm you if you dont mind.
