A 355nation How To presented by
ESB

Project Name
How-to change water pump

Project Description
show how to change old worn out pump with a new one

Skill Level
easy to Moderate

Project Vehicle
Make: GMC
Model: Canyon
Year: 2006
Engine: 2.8L
Power windows: yes
Sun Roof: No

Tools Needed
10mm socket
3/8 drive ratchet
13mm wrench
Flat head screwdriver
large adjustable pliers or cresent wrench
pin spanner or wedge block of wood (for pulley removal)

Project Time
2 hours or less

Project Cost
around $50 US for the pump and RTV sealant

I didnt take pics of removing the fan shroud but its pretty simple.
Remove the upper radiator hose connecting to the radiator and bend out of way.
Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the small [ shaped clips holding the shroud together.
I think there are 7 total.
After that the entire fan shroud comes out easily.

Next remove the fan. The Chilton manual for our trucks says use a pin spanner to hold the pulley from turning while using a large adjustable plier or cresent wrench to turn the one large nut holding fan on. (COUNTER CLOCKWISE) But I simply placed a wedge shaped block of wood between two pulleys. I found that it was best to leave the belt on those two pulleys to help with grip as the pulley still turned without it.

Image

Once the fan is out the 4 bolts holding the pulley to the water pump come off real easy using a 13mm wrench or socket. Once the bolts were out the pulley came off by hand for me but you may need to tap it with a small hammer if it feels tight.

Image

In this pic without the pulley you can clearly see the water leaking.

Image

Now use a 10mm socket to remove the 5 bolts holding the pump in place.
Slide the pump out.
Clean up the sealing surface very well and make sure no old gasket is left stuck on block.

Image

Place a small layer of RTV sealant to both sides of the new gasket and place on water pump.

Image

Place water pump in position and install the bolts finger tight. Make sure your gasket stays in proper place. torque bolts to 89 in-lbs.

Image

Install pulley and tighten bolts to 18 ft-lbs
install belt. The tension arm has a spot in the middle to place a 3/8 drive ratchet to add enough leverage to easily take the tension off the pulleys to place the belt back in place.

Image

Install cooling fan and torque hub nut 41 ft-lbs

The remainder of install is reverse of removal.

Add coolant to specified level.

On a side note I didn't add coolant or start my truck until three hours after I installed to the pump itself to give the RTV time to dry.

Re: How to: change water pump

great write up, i did a 83 caddy that the water pump was about a foot long and covered the entire front of the engine... however i would steer clear of RTV, its not a good thing to get floating around and clogging up shit. EX: trans pans, oil pans, water pumps. Always try to use the proper gasket to avoid future problems.

None the less THANKS FOR THE GREAT JOB!!!

Re: How to: change water pump

i actually just did this today... the gasket that comes with the OEM is a paper gasket and i just lighty coated both side with the RTV copper and than a light bead around the outside edge... done it like that for years... altho everyone should invest in a boa constritor works on water pumps, oil filter anything smooth your cant grip and dont wanna harm...

Re: How to: change water pump

Just noticed this!

Did you use a drain pan for the coolent?

Please do the right thing guys and dispose of coolent in the right manner. Almost every city if not some part stores have a fluid recycling program!

My suburb says to put coolant down the toilet. :)

They're pretty confident in the water purification systems they have in place around here.

Rich, yours will be alittle more involved

My millage was around 46Kish I think.

thanks for the write up...just bought the colly four days ago and it was leaking at the water pump.

with your help and photos...I swapped the pump this morning.

took about four hours including setup and cleanup.

The fan and sheoud....coming off and going on was the trickiest and most time consuming...the pump was a breeze.

I saw a lot of scale in the coolant so I also flushed the radiator and doubl3 flushed the engine before reassembly.

NOTE...the bolts need antisieze and only a slight tightening.

I have read about a lot of people here breaking off bolts in a lot of places over tightening,....partly because of some ultra lihgt alloy appearing to have aluminum in the mix....anyway.....tight is tight. In the case of the waterpump its like 8lbs torque.

Thanks

Some places say you can let coolant go down the drain for the waste water treatment plant cause apparently there is something in the coolant that helps in the treatment or something. At least that's what I've heard

Do that here and prepare to have the LEO at your door with a arrest warrant. And you will also see a little paper pusher taking sample's of your drain or whatever for proof. Seen it done more than once. All it takes is one neighbor seeing you poor that shit down the drain.
