Is that rendering what you place. On your truck looking like ordid you just use it to show the Flames

I think what meant you? Is my truck not, is from a forum pic/reader render, I re-dood it.

My truck will NEVER be that low- everybody is already doing this...

How about jacking it UP, and putting even tinier tires on the front, like an old Gasser?

Oh yeah, grilles. Ghost in the machine every time I let it rest a moment or two...and a the first sheet ALWAYS gets botched in some way...

Aw heck, I'll cop to being the "issue" this time:

I got the upper center set of grille slots off by a notch. Both sets of vectors (this, including the mirrored left half, I mean) are identical...mebbe I'll just go with it...

My home made CNC Chevy Colorado grille, cont'd:
The lower passenger side, raw cut ABS sheet, .250" (not 6mm this time, always check what you're actually cutting, because it varies) thick from www.interstateplastics.com.
These will be thermo formed slightly to allow them to curve to match the opening when they're installed. The slight ripple of the surface will be dealt with in the coatings processes.

Image

Sorry about the poor focus, I was being rained on (this would be a great time to wet-sand those black stripes off the hood) while snapping. I almost milled the "lands" out, thus making the grille bars thinner, front-to-back. In the end, I decided that the raised sections would look good painted, and bring the vertical slats/flames together better. 30 minutes' mill time to cut the parts you see so far...

Image

The fit is really tighter than this- the part meets the edges perfectly if the grille is flexed into position. Notice the rabbet cut at the grille center edge. This will allow me to splice the custom grille halves at the proper angle, and bond in a filler strip, to be later blended into a clean peak, or just smoothed... at any rate the center bond will be STRONG.

Image

Not that this ever broke. It's the same material, ABS plastic (like the original Chevy Colorado grille, BTW)

Image

I have this in the garage...yes, it is just taped into place here.

Image

Anybody wanna give it a home? $100 + S&H over $20 can own it. Note: I will want many X that to make another one up fresh, consider this NOT more than ONE available.

Image

Here, a glimpse at the botched (?) upper passenger side grille half (the upper part in this pic). The last row of slots is one position off (hey I slapped out these vectors after 2+ pots of Costa Rican Marching Coffee), but I'm not sure if I care or not. I think I'll just run the other side's parts and see how it looks.

Image

The lower half of the home made truck grille came out OK, I think.
Not how it will be finished, but can you picture it in silver, with all the recesses painted Victory Red? ooooh.

Off to re-load the machine, cut the rest of this thing out.

Has anybody here ever sawn all the grille mesh out, leaving the rim? I may recess this, but the plan was to have it flush with the body.

...down at the sunset grill...it's like this's takin' ALL DAY.

Gluing the grille halves together.

Image

ABS plastic welding rod from Harbor Freight is used to fill the middle gaps, and give the centers a bit more strength where they meet.

Image

The screwdriver underneath is helping; it's making sure that the two sides meet at a shallow "about right" angle. Hey, you try taking measurements off that Chevy grille mesh...I finally settled for eye-balling this. The upper grille has more angle than the bottom, BTW.

Image

I don't think my small mistake on the grille bars will matter, as it's also there in the CAD, and doesn't leap out at you.
Now, to...just walk away, forget these even exist for about half a day or so. By then, the welds will be as solid as the sheet is, and I'll be able to blend them together with some files and sandpaper.

thanks!

Sizing up what I have here, I think the stock mesh will be hand-sawn out completely, leaving the finished outer rim of it. This grille's outline perfectly matches THAT, so I'll bond it down permanently (since cutting the mesh is pretty permanent already!) and then go about smoothing it to be flush with the stock nose parts.

Brass Knuckles Custom Chevy Truck Grille.

Oh, look what fell out of my head this morning. The sky's the limit, almost.
I may be drawing up a clamp set for my grilles today, so this mind-changing doesn't hurt so bad.
Image

I need to draw one up with a "No Mean City" skulls (lower left) album cover motif...

The Colorado custom grille after the bonds have cured out. I then wet-sanded them to a peak in the middle, and took the shine off the faces in the same manner.

Image

These will take on a curve as they're installed. I considered thermoforming them, but don't want to risk botching them...

Image

These will get a spray of Bulldog adhesion promoter, then a few wet-sanded primer coats before finishing in the body color.

The flat black stripes have gone truly flat...

and will be carefully wet-sanded off, and the red finish underneath doctored back to reasonable health.

Then she gets the Damn-the-wife FLAME JOB.
Image

The morning dew was still on the surfaces, and my hands made marks in the flat paint as well, making the hood look major knackered. Here's later in the day.

M, don't like my latest grill (as it is) and braining up something completely different (big surprise) this time... I think a full CAD system has been a hindrance...giant chunks of cardboard in hand, I'll chop just the mesh from the stocker, and do an assembled eggcrate grille, -think 1970 Camaro grille mesh-recessed into the opening.

Replacement grilles are cheap if you fuck em up.

Ever look at the SS grilles? They're nice bout probably wouldn't take a bird very well..

Image

Good call, pretty conflicts with strong there. I'd like to do something slightly recessed like this, but maybe not so tight mesh, more along the thickness of the latest Camaro grille:

I like the BEEF look here.
