So my rear end took a shit a while back, my truck’s been sitting for a few weeks while I gathered parts. I figured it would be easier to just throw a new (to me, from and 08 coly) rear end on there instead of having the differential rebuilt. The new rear end is complete from drum to drum. It seems like it’s going to be a really easy swap, just disconnect the drive shaft, leafs, shocks and brake lines and then bolt everything back up to the new one.

However I’m worried I’m forgetting something. Anyone know of a how to on doing this? Will I have to bleed my brakes afterwards? Any advice before I dive under the truck tomorrow morning?

Thanks

Here is a thread from thatfordguy I think the good info for you starts on page 3 post 42 but I would read all of it.

Nice, thanks for the link

That's basically all that is involved. You will have to bleed the brakes afterwards. Use blue loc-tite on the u-joint bolts. Since our axles are over the leaves, the easiest way to get the rear out is to leave the front of the leaves bolted to the truck and leave the wheels on, support the rear of the truck, unbolt the rear spring hangers, then jack the ass end WAY up, disconnect everything and just roll the rear end straight out the back. Swap the wheels over to the new rear, and roll it back in.

You shouldn't hve any trouble, it's very straightforward. Should take around 2 hours if you have air tools, maybe 3-4 if you're doing it the hard way.
Cool I was planning on disconnecting the springs at the rear shackles. And no air tools for me, gonna be doing a few turns on the wrench :)

I read that you need to mark the orientation of the driveshaft when you remove it from the tranny (obviously i wont be doing this) but do I need to worry about this on the u-joint at the rear diff? Seems to me like the orientation wouldn't really matter...

I did a 4.10 swap in my truck, Only thing to look out for is the emergency brake lines... Make sure your donor axle is from the same configuration ex: Single cab for Single cab, ext/ crew. The emergency brake lines are difference in length in single cab vs ext and crew cables. So you may end up having to swap out lines.
The donor axle is off a single cab and I've got an extended cab, hoping it will reach.

Nice this definitely boosted my confidence, thanks for the input guys.

It will not reach, you will need to disassemble both drums on both sets of axles and swap out the Emergency brake lines, they will not reach trust me.
Bummer, guess I'll read more about our drums. I hear they're either really difficult or really easy to work on depending on who you ask.. lol

Damn.. I found a 3.73 G80 rear end for $350 with 71k miles less than 2 hours from my house. DAMN BEING BROKE!
I paid 225 for mine with 150 for shipping. Every place I called around me wanted 500+. Closest junk yard to my house had one, FOR $750 hahah. I've never actually laughed at someone on the phone until I heard that. I guess there's a first for everything. :)

Never worked on drum brakes before, anyone got any good links? I searched and couldn't find much, also scoured the "brakes" section. It would be sweet if I could find a how to on removing this stupid e-brake line
