i have heard alot of diff opinions on what pressure is good to run in a 245/45/18 i just drive around town and dont drive like a highschool kid that just got his license i want nice ride and good wear.. i looked all over google and coudlnt find anything but a BMW forum that said 36psi which is what i have in em now and the back end seems to bounce a bit so i might decrease it by 2psi and see how that feels... any suggestions??

Great thread, I wanted to post one like it but didn't.

I have 235/40/18 Sumitomos and the max psi rating is 55psi. I filled them up to 45psi but was wondering on others takes.

my rule oif thumb is to go by what GM put on the inside of the door... cause lets face it some jack ass at a tire store has done fuck all but sell a tire while i expect that GM has some reason possibly even did some testing to come up with that magical number so why not put a little fayth in the people that designed our trucks?. that being said i do run a Xterrain so mine goes as low as 10psi or as high as 45.... but for street use i usually have it at the reccomended psi from gm,.,., cant remember what it is i just read off my door when i air up

that recommend PSI from gm is for a stock size tire though so ya cant go by that if you change the tire size.. the tire pressure has a couple determing factor such as weight of vehicle.. type of tire and size , if your towing something, and just personal preference of how you want it to handle.. generally the smaller the side wall the more pressure you need to protect the rim from bein bent.. also if you have a wide tire you need more volume of air which means ur going to need more pressure in there... like a big mudder tire would require less pressure cause it has a big side wall more support vs a low pro tire which is alot less forgiving..

i dont see why PSI should matter on tire size... ive run 33's on the same PSI as 305/75r15 camaro vs truck.... just start with GM's number and than adjust to your taste... tire makers and sellers dont know the exact weight or anything about our vehicles.. so how can they tell you its too much or not enough.

im not in any way trying to start an arguement but PSI is PSI the PSI shouldnt change depending on volume it has nothing at all to do with volume. and my big mudders actually ran at a higher PSI than my low pros on the maro because it took more pressure to keep the correct shape for equal tire wear. once at the trail we would air them down for off road traction but on road it was around 55psi or more at times. i agree that type of tire makes a difference especially if your switch between biasplys, radial, dual compound etc. i under stand why you would want a higher pressure when running super low pros so that the tire does not compress as easily. but i still say that the factory recomended is still the best place to start because gm has taken all pieces of the equation into acoount like weight, wheel base, etc. wether you go higher or lower is personal but its still the best place to start.

Camaro SS 20's call for 36 in the book.

Those are 245/45-20 and 275/40-20 tires.

Wanna know what people are running them at?

Long story short, over 40 PSI in ANY 4 wheeled passenger vehicle tire is rediculous.

how about you look on the side of the tire and see what psi it tells you to run them at?

Also if you are in a 15 passenger van the tires should be ran at 80 psi. Running them at a lower psi can cause catastrophic failure.

Another pointer: when driving, if you have a blowout, tread release, etc. on a tire accelerate, get the vehicle under control and drive until it is safe to start slowing down and pulling off to the side of the road. NEVER HIT YOUR BRAKES WHEN YOU HAVE A BLOWOUT OR IT COULD AND ALMOST ALWAYS WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOSE CONTROL

ya thats for a stock tire size 225/75/15 so if you get low pros you cant go by that number.... which is why i made this thread to begin with cause bmw recommends 36psi in a 245/45/18.. which is 6 psi more than a stock tire size...

In all of the tires I have owned or sold, I put the pressure at 5psi under max. You also have to remember that tires heat up when driving and the pressure increases, that is why you do not fill to max. If you buy new tires, don't always look at the pressure listed on the door. Check the tires first. You could have had a stock tire with the max of 35p.s.i. and just bought a tire at a max of 44p.s.i. And in instances like alot of you with liftd trucks, you may have gotten a A/T that was an LT rated tire which will have an 80p.s.i. max. Check your tires, not your doors, use your descretion.
