That's why they put a stereo in the truck! I see you live in R.I.. I'm guessing you finally had a warm day and drove around with the windows down for the first time in a while?
Seriously, it could be wearing out. The key to long life of a fuel pump is the never run your truck below 1/4 on the fuel gauge. The fuel in the tank keeps it running cool. I never will forget the time my '89 Silverado had a fuel pump that started making noise like you describe. The gauge was on empty, so I stopped on the way home from work an filled it up. When I got back in the truck, it wouldn't start. Not getting fuel. I was close to home and just walked home to get my tools. Ended up eating supper and hanging out with my boys for a while and eventually went back and the truck started right up. My mechanic buddy told me that when a fuel pump starts wearing out, it runs hotter. When you fill up the tank, the fuel is cool and it "quenches" the pump and it locks up.
Don't let your tank get too low and start saving your pennies, sounds like it's only a matter of time if it seems to be noisier than you've noticed before.
