Figured I'd keep track of my progress for all to see. Thus far only 3.7s from 2007 have been the only candidates for previous years.
I bought a 3.7 from a friend and member here on the nation, without whom I'd still be less a motor and working vehicle. Moreover all of the background research and continued support throughout this process would have been nonexistent if it were any other seller. Thank you.

Motor arrived on Friday and we proceeded to extract the now dead 3.5l on Saturday evening.

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

There's no point in swapping the cams. We got the trans off this afternoon, torque converter and flywheel with a seized motor. The fuel rail from my motor is swapped over. Egr blocked off for now. Manifold to come off later. Water pump. Gonna marry the trans after dinner and have it ready to install after work tomorrow. i have to track down the maf scaling and see if i have to reduce my intake to accommodate it

When it doesn't start, check this thread :)

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

If you need a stock tune from an 07' 3.7L and your tuner has HpTuners mine is in the Tune Repository.

As for the MAF scaling I believe they are the same diameter tubing and sensors are basically the same.
I think 08 was 1/8 narrower. Been a while since i had to know that

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

I'm not doing just block, or head, It's the whole motor harness and computers. I have all I'll need to make it work. I choose to swap the injectors to the 3.5 fuel rail due to mileage and the harness. Once the plug is here for the bcm it should, in theory, work.

So you're using 08 ECM/TCM and 04 BCM?

Pretty sure 04 was GMLAN, and 08 is CAN. Not sure how this is going to work.

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

Show me where I've flamed. I'm not the only other one telling you this. Your gonna have to swap the exhaust cam sprockets and install a ecas.
This would be the cleanest way to go. Keep the 04 ECU, swap cam sprockets, install the extra cam sensor.
He would then have to swap the throttle body too. No splicing, no wiring, no problem.

It'd be interesting to see if it's possible to swap a PCM/TCM/BCM combo. I think they would all 3 work toghther nicely. The problem is that there is a whole shit-ton of other modules on the bus.

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

Prove me wrong or walk.

The 08 motor is backwards compatible with the gmlan bcm.
So your using the 08 PCM and TCM, 04 BCM. 08 motor and harness should work. I don't see why You need the BCM plug? You mean the 56 way PCM blue plug? J1 or X1 ?

Anyway the 08 PCM should be backward compatible. Here is some things to think about;

-Vatts (pass lock) will most likely need to be turned off, cause the vins won't match

-If your using the 04 tranny it shouldn't have the input shaft sensor, show me pics up close of the connecters on it, I'll tell you if it has or not. The 08 PCM will be looking for the input speed sensor or I.S.S and will not be to happy to see it's missing, and usually can not be turned off with a tuner.

- your gas gauge will read backwards I can help you with that.

- you may have a constant battery light. Unless you scooped the 08 RVC module or regulated voltage control module connected to the negative battery cable.

-08-09 was a changeover for Fuel pump supply modules, and it may or may not have had one. If it did you will need to do some tuning to get rid of error codes, and the fuel pump may not work, without some tuning.

That's all I can think of off the top off my head, apart from the 56 wires you have two splice! BTW most connecters come with pins no pigtails unless you ordered it that way, and you need a special GM crimp tool to install them. If you need the pins installed I can do that for you and then you can just splice in the pigtails.

Good luck .. man I'm hear with any electrical questions.

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

I tell ya that load leveler is a life saver. We got it out together without so much as a dented oil filter. Pulled virtually everything off the motor i could and pulled the RAD and ac cooler.

Nearly $200 for all the fluids necessary for the swap.

Re: 04 to 08 conversion

I have some buddies at the dealership willing to help make the tuning work. I also have a dyno shop that is willing to help.

I figured pass lock would freak. My buddy helping does auto electric for a living do he's got all the tools necessary to get the clip working

Sweet! Glad to hear man, should pretty straight forward then.

Still curious about your tranny weather it has I.S.S or not?
