I'm new new to the forum and apologize if I am posting this in the wrong area. I just recently purchased a 2005 Chevy Colorado LT crew cab. Has 4 wheel drive and 38 k miles. Sometimes, not always, when i leave the vehicle and return the radio is on, or windshield wipers. Basically anything left on in the vehicle. I took it to a local mechanic. Its naturally didn't act up while it was there. he told me to come get it. I go to get it, the radio comes on as we are talking. No keys in it, no one around it. He tells me he thinks its the BCM and I have to take it to the dealer to get programmed.

take it to the dealer, tell them all the issues I'm having. Told them i think its the BCM ( per mechanic). they call me back a couple days later, told me its the ignition. ( makes sense). They replace it, $665 later i get it back. I have it for two hours. Go to the grocery store, come back out side, radios back on, on a Friday. I'm ticked, naturally, call them the following Monday. Take it back in, show them the videos I took of my vehicle acting up again. They call me a couple days later tell me nothing is wrong with it, come get it. I'm more mad at this point. Talk to the manager who tells me he will figure it out. He just called me, he has had it a week now, says he cant find anything wrong with it. I ask if I can get some kind of refund because they didn't fix it, he says he doesn't know they didn't fix it...

I'm looking for any advice here. I'm already out almost $700 ( I have a new ignition..?) Anyone else had this problem. The previous owner had a kill switch put on the battery, I don't want to pop the hood every time I want to drive somewhere. I'm not very 'mechanically inclined'. Any advise helps. Thanks in advance,
The new guy.

Crew cab models are known to have problems with the wiring breaking in two between the cab door and body, right where the wires exit the door and enter the grommet to go to the body. If so, this can cause the radio not to turn off when exiting the truck, no chime when key left in ignition, ABS fault light on , and no doubt more as well. Check wiring at that location on both sides.

Actually, @OldTime got me thinking. Some things you can check.

If you leave the keys in the ignition, and open the door does it chime?
If you manually turn your headlights on, and turn off the truck, does it chime?
If you try to lock the truck with the key fob, and a door is open, does your horn beep ~5 times and then unlock the doors.

Any other electronics not working properly? Does your radio work, horn, turn signals, electric windows (if equipped). I'm willing to bet that it had an aftermarket radio, and when the previous owner returned it to stock, he didn't wire it up properly. Because the radio is tied into the bus system, it is absolutely critical that wiring doesn't get messed up, and even the slightest interference on a bus line can cause any number of "electrical issues"

Has the truck ever refused to start?

Does the truck have an aftermarket remote start system?

Did the dealer replace the electrical part of the ignition switch or the lock cylinder tumbler assembly?

From the owner's manuals:

Retained Accessory Power (RAP)

These vehicle accessories can be used for up to 20 minutes after the engine is turned off:

  • Audio System
  • Wipers
  • Power Windows
These features work when the key is in ON/RUN or ACC/ACCESSORY and once the key is turned from ON/RUN to LOCK/OFF, power to these features continue to work for up to 20 minutes or until a door is opened.

I don't believe so, at least not according to this bill.

I don't have the key fob for it, but it is programmed for one. No after market car starter. Everything electrical appears to work fine, ie power windows, radio, windshield wiper. Its just after I leave and come back, sometimes its back on. Once in a great while they don't shut off when I exit the vehicle as if the keys were still in it.

The RAP logic, would suggest that your truck doesn't notice your door opening.

When you open the door, does your radio turn off? Can you still operate the window switches?

When you open your door, with the key in the ignition, does your truck chime, and on the cluster, does it say "Doors"

The RAP will shut down power after about 20 minutes even if the door is never opened.

It is a good quick test though as other's suggested above.....
Sit in the truck with the key on, and the radio on.
Remove the key, the radio should stay on.
Open the driver's door, the radio should go off.

When I open the door the radio turns off. Cant operate windows after opened. It chimes and everything as it should as of now. Everything is working properly as of right now. However, I have only had the truck back for about two hours. I will update as this progresses.

Can you post a picture of the dealer receipt with a part number of what part was replaced?

The problem is most likely caused by a defective ignition lock cylinder staying engaged, if the dealer didn't replace it?
I will post a photo of the bill soon, its at my work place. Ill be sure and try to get it tomorrow.
Thanks

And you believe the radio is coming on some time after the truck is shut down?

Right, for instance, lats week we had a decent snow storm ( northern michigan). I had my windshield wipers on. Shut the car off, wipers went off. Walked by my truck about a 1/2 later, wipers still off. Returned to my truck about 4 hours later. Wipers and radio were on.

Update- Dealership couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. They did however refund me my money. The truck hasn't acted up in a bit, not sure if its because its starting to warm up and is dryer, less snow.
