2004 Chevy Z71 Truck Leaking Oil & Clicking Front Differential After Off-Roading

I pretty much always baby the crap out of my truck, 2004 z71, but took it through some slop last week. Almost got stuck, lot of revving and turning in 4wd. Long story short, I now have a problem. First off today I noticed my truck dripping some oil out of the pan above the mid-drive shaft. Is that the transmission oil pan about half way back? Didn't see any visible cracks, what would cause it to start leaking randomly. Should a new seal be enough to fix that? More importantly, today I was driving and I heard an intermittent clicking from the front end. After looking into the noise, I found it to be coming from the front differential. It does it on and off in 2wd, but when in 4wd hi or low, the clicking is much louder and more persistent. I'm assuming it's a cracked tooth or something in the diff, does this sound consistent with what I am experiencing? I'd assume since the front drive shaft is always spinning driving the truck in its current condition will only increase the extent of the damage. What does new internals for a front diff usually run? Any questions I can answer to help you guys narrow this down and get to the bottom of this? As always thanks for the help, hope to get the truck back up to speed soon.

The front driveshaft is weaker than the front differential and is more likely the source of your problem. It uses a CV style connection into the transfer case, and a u-joint connection to the front differential if I'm not mistaken, so a u-joint seems the most likely option for clicking...especially if it's worse in 4wd. As for oil leaking...the transmission is located directly behind the engine, and the transfer case is behind that. The transfer case is about halfway back on the truck, and has the rear and front driveshafts coming out of it. It's also a lot smaller than the transmission. You'll have to determine if the leak is coming from the transmission or the transfer case.

Okay, the dripping is coming from the transmission oil pan. Likely not related to the front-end issue I'm experiencing. Thank you for the offer James, I just may have to take you up on that. I'm right near flemington. Work early tomorrow morning, guess it's best to not drive her until I figure out the issue.

If it's a metallic clicking/almost pinging sounding noise, I'd still bet on the u joint on the front driveshaft. If it was a CV you'd feel vibration through the steering wheel.

this is the first problem..

dont baby it. beat the piss out of it like a dead horse. these trucks are strong, and can take the crap thrown at it..

cause one day you'll look back and think, why the hell did i baby it when i could have had some fun in it??
